I had a friends mother come up to me today and asked if I knew how to use gold leaf...Ive heard of it but never messed with it..Can someone help me with this by explaining how to do it? and any other information about gold leaf would be excellent!

all i know is that it sticks to things easily and it very delicate, so it can be time consuming to get it on properly. the cake i have instructions for only has it sprikled on, so theres not really anything useful about how to use it in other ways im afraid!

Like she just said, its very delicate. It comes in sheets with paper inbetween them. You use tweezers to pick it up so that it doesnt stick to your hands. And like how sometimes when you pull out a piece of saran wrap and it gets stuck to itself, this does the same thing.
When your applying it to something, its good to have it damp so like your gumpaste lets say, should have a small amount of gum glue brushed on it. Then once its on the items, you use a soft brush to smooth it out and it will also remove excess. But it is very hard to work with! I made a chocolate champagne bottle and used it for my "cork" wrap and it took a bunch of sheets to get it covered right.

It is **VERY!** expensive! Do not confuse what you can buy in an art store.......that's is not edible gold leaf.

Yes, that too! Its probably cheaper to buy the gold highlighter and use that instead of gold leaf. Lot easier to work with.

She said she would give me more information later, but knowing it is expensive, im not sure I want to cover a big area of whatever she wants covered.. But if thats what she wants then Ill do it. I will mention the gold highlighter, and see if she is interested in that, but um afraid I dont know what that is...Thanks again!! greatly appreciated

Gold highlighter is a form/color of petal dust. It is available where ever one would buy petal dusts. HTH
