I admit I never took a cake decorating class, because if I did I am sure I would know this. I am baking a cake for my DH for his birthday. I am thinking of trying a basket design on the sides. How do I get that effect?

I hope this makes sense & I hope you can open my attachment. (it's in adobe) Basket weave is really pretty simple. Crumb coat your cake first. then :

1-always start at the back. Pipe a vertical line from top to bottom. do it again to double the thickness of your line.

2-use your tip to make two horizontal "hash marks" (hHM) out to the side of your vertical line (VL) on both sides.

3-use your tip to make one vertical HM (vHM) above the hHM on both sides. This will give you your proper spacing & length to go with the size of basketweave tip you are using.

4-now pipe a horizontal line (HL) across your hHM.

5-move above your vHM to make another HL.

6-make one vHM above your new HL on both sides to get your spacing again.

7-move above your new vHM to make another new HL

Continue this way till you reach the top.

8-pipe a new VL from top to bottom at the outside edge of your HL (I'm right handed so I go counter clockwise around my cake. Lefty's go the other way) only a single thick line from now on.

9- make two hHM to the right of your VL

10-make one vHM above

11-pipe a new HL from the "inside" of the left basket weave across your new VL all the way over to meet up with your newest vHM on the far right.

12-make a new vHM above the new HL to give you your spacing.

13-repeat step 11

14- repeat step 12

keep going till you reach the top. Start again with step 8. This continues all the way around the cake till you reach the back again. Most likely, your basket weave wont line up at the end, but thats why you start at the back!

I looked at the wilton link & the only thing it says that I don't do is to run my vertical lines on top of the tails of my horizontal lines. My wilton instructor showed us that as long as everything butts up together really well & you bury your tip when starting you HL, then you'll never see the difference. Everyone loves my BW & people ask "how in the world?" No one can figure out how you create the effect, it looks so complicated. icon_wink.gif What they don't know ... thumbs_up.gif

Hmmmmmmm ....... icon_confused.gif maybe I do run my VL over the tails of my HL? ... icon_rolleyes.gif After seeing that youtube video (love the music btw) I think that I do. It's been a while. icon_redface.gif I love BW though & wish I had more opportunity to do it. icon_razz.gif

Okay the video really drives it home! Thanks for that link! thumbs_up.gif I would totally love to try it. I am making my DH a chocolate round cake with chocolate frosting and I thought that it might look cool to do the basket weave with a blue buttercream. I like the way brown and blue look together. Certainly a lot of WOW factor! How much frosting would you say it would take to do a 2 layer 9" round cake? It looks like it might be a lot.

I want to say between 6-7 cups, lol, been awhile since I've done it too! Depends on how tall your cake is too though, if it's 4" high you might need closer to 8 cups.

Wow, that is a lot. Is that factoring in frosting the whole cake or just doing the basket around the edge and any small decorations I do on the top? I am planning on "frosting and filling" the cake with chocolate frosting, so the bc would just be for decoration.

Duh! Sorry about that, I had read your post but it didn't sink in! Ok, in that cake you'll only need probably about 2-3 cups for the basketweave and decoration icon_biggrin.gif
