I am thinking about taking the master course there and I have noticed that you can also take a sugar creations class. Has anyone taken it? If so how did you like the experience?

I took my first sugar class at Wilton (and I've also done the Master's class and many others there) and I still think it was wonderful, even after having taken classes with 2 other sugar artists--Ewald Notter and BKeith Ryder.

Laurie Bradach is the instructor and she is a hoot. She has you cook up a batch of sugar so that you know the good, the bad, and the ugly right away. She's patient, funny, and honest. The basis she gave me have helped me in all of my subsequent classes.

Thank you I am planning on taking the sugar class along with the master class. Any classes you do or do not recommend there? Also where did you stay if you don't mind me asking? I'm finding that it's a lot more to plan than i thought. I've never even been west lol.

I have never taken the sugar class but I did just take the master course in November. I had taken all 3 Wilton courses at Michaels and was very disappointed with the master course. I thought I would learn a lot more than I had already learned and did not learn enough to justify the cost of the class plus the cost of food, lodging, etc. However if you have never taken any Wilton classes you might find it beneficial.

I took the pulled sugar class and just had the best time EVER! I learned TONS and burned my fingerprints off too! LOL But, really, it was just the one day class but it was worth the time, effort and money to do it. Came back and my WONDERFUL hubby made me a warming cabinet for me to make more pulled sugar. I think you will have a great time!

Well the sugar class sounds awesome, that was definetly the class I'm most excited for. Has anyone taken the gum paste or fondant class there? I have taken the three wilton store classes all ready. not sure which supplement classes I want to take when I go for my master course.

If you haven't taken other Wilton classes in fondant and gum paste, those classes are great, too. I honestly can't complain about any of the classes at HQ. The cost/hr. is excellent for the quality of construction and you always learn something!

As for the Masters class, you will re-learn things that were taught in 1,2,3--but from Wilton instructors who've been teaching for years. You WILL lose bad habits, get faster, look at things in a new way, and have hours of time spent with "like minds". You will ask questions you didn't know you had!

I've stayed at a variety of places. Any one you consider, call and ask about the Wilton negotiated rate. My favorite is the Holiday Inn Willowbrook--about 4 miles due east with a shuttle and if you join the Priority Club you get a marvelous breakfast every morning. It cost more than some of the Extended Stay hotels (a classmate got bed bug bites while staying in one of those....), but you don't need to rent a car (that sits in the parking lot for 10+ hrs. and that you're too tired to drive, anyway).

I also like the Marriott Towne Place Downers Grove (shuttle & breakfast, too).

I did enjoy the gumpaste class the most. I however did not learn anything from the fondant class.

The areas around the 2 hotels I mentioned and also around the school itself (set in a small strip mall in Lombard), are very safe---mostly commercial, lots of car traffic, etc. They call it "Chicago", but you're actually about 20 west of the actual downtown area, out in the bedroom communities/suburbs--not too much to fear there. Heck, downtown Chicago is pretty safe, too, unless you like to prowl the streets at 1am...

One way to spend weekend down-time is to take the METRA train from Downer's Grove in to downtown. $5 for all day on the weekends and there's so much to see & do---------LOVE IT!

If you've taken the fondant and gum paste classes previously, I don't really think that you'll get much new out of the ones offered as addenda to the Masters.

Blakescakes has some really good advise for the traveling aspect. I live about 20 minutes from the Wilton HQ. That whole area is very nice. There are nice placed to stay and eat right there. It is pretty busy traffic-wise, but other than that...nice.
I would also reccomend taking the Metra downtown for a day. If you are comming any time soon, it will be cold. But i have lived in Chicago my whole life and I think it's a beautiful city with lots to do and lots of great restaurants down town too! Have fun!

Thank you! now I guess all I have to do is make him read this. But he still probably won't want me to go by myself.... oh well I'll figure something out. It is sweet that he worries so much about me. I am really excited for this I think 2 weeks of all cake would be great.
