This is my first post and I'm not even sure if this should go here but anywho...I am going to attempt to make my first cake =)
I went the the Charm City Cakes web page to email and ask for a good fondant recipe, and I stopped to look if maybe they had a link for one...instead I found a response in the FAQ that they do not answer email questions about recipes and a link to this forum, sooooo I came here and found one with a good review. I also found a good recipe for Red Velvet cake, so I am set to try my first non-box cake HAH!!
Wish me luck, and I'll post a picture of ShAmE later tonight...good or bad im making a cake darnit!!
Lauren.

"caketarded" that is the best word ever!!! With your permission of course, I'd like to use that from now on!
Welcome! I found cake central the same way you did, this site is wonderful and all the people I have come across are very helpful. I have to agree with DnEKakez, the MMF recipe on here is very easy and tastes awesome. I hope to see your finished cake soon.

Charm City Cakes uses Satin Ice brand fondant. I recognized the label on one of the buckets on one of the Ace of Cake episodes.
I love your word!!!! i have to agree that is one of the best words I have heard in a long time!!!
Welcome and best of luck , soon you will be a true cake addict!! like the rest of us!!!!
Well, all I can say is that you came to the right place. Just be sure to take the little warning label in the upper left-hand corner of the page seriously. I'm having trouble getting out of here and getting back to the job that actually pays the rent. Hopefully, some day that will be cake decorating, and then I won't have to leave here except to execute some of the wonderful ideas I'm finding.

I've used Satin Ice and I love it for the true colors like black and red. I can't get my MMF dark enough so I use Satin Ice and I love it!
Michael's is always starting cake classes, if you have one in your area you could give them a call. HTH
Welcome Lauren and welcome to your new addiction!
When I was looking for cake classes recently (which I never took of course)
I basically googled cake decorating in Anchorage and a few places popped up I didnt even know existed, and I have lived in the Anchorage/Wasilla area for 11 years. Try that first, then try a Michaels. Honestly though, you dont need them to start! There is plenty of help here, and there are always DVD's from Sugarshack.
Good luck, and post pics!
Welcome to CC, I like you stumbled upon CC about a year and a half ago and am now doing cakes I never thought that I would be doing. I took a class from Michael's got nothing from it. What has helped me the most is the people here on CC . Someone from CC directed me to www.youtube.com you can search for icing, fondant , royal icing making gumpaste flowers whatever and it shows you many videos on how to. I'm a visual person. I hope this helps you also and it's all free!!!!!! Happy baking. Hey I've even searched for cupcakes and candy and it has something for everyone.
I wanted to add take the Michael's 40% off coupon and get the Wilton fondant for 12.00 instead of 20.00 and make some dummiecakes. I won't eat the Wiltons but I love the texture for practicing with. Good luck to you.

Hobby Lobby offers the Wilton classes too. They are a good source for learning the basic skills.

the hobby lobby website im finding is model airplanes...am i just that dumb?? LOL
i found michaels has them starting in Feb, im going to call the area stores to see about them...thanks for the help.
The Wilton fondant tastes and smells funny. I've tried to add flavoring to steer it a different course and found that nothing works. It's just odd stuff. Possibly made with a smelly kind of gum--or something that's funky.
I like too just don't like the medicine smell of Wiltons, I do like the texture though. I've tried many different fondants homemade that I like the taste but I can't get the texture just right. I like the taste of Satin Ice but truthfully just don't like a chunk of fondant on my cake , I'm a buttercream girl. Wiltons is good for a practice cake. I make one tear it apart and make another for my portfolio. Then do live ones as I get the business. You will learn plenty of tricks here at CC I love this site!!!!!
Hello, I am new to this site as well. I have been doing a ton of reading there is a wealth of information on this site!
I am taking the Wilton cake classes at my local hobby lobby. So far so good its a great class!
I totally agree, the Wilton fondant is nasty! I had to use it in my class at Michaels, and refuse to put it on any cake I make now. I do make my own using MMF. Love this web site as well!!
I just got done covering 5 dummy tiers with that Wilton stuff....waiting for the smell to clear the air! Barf!! It is good for dummies, and that's it....never for anything you intend someone to eat!
I too am new and am in the middle of Wilton's class right now. On my pictures I have posted my first ever fondant covered cake. I used MMF and loved it. I did not have any trouble making it and my family liked the taste. Now I would like to try the rolled buttercream! I have been self taught up to this point and have done so using CC, youtube and cake/cookie magazines/books. It is truely an addiction!!! Below is a link to my first MMF cake. Good luck! Things only get better with practice!!

I took Wilton classes at Michaels over the summer. I liked them, but had a pretty good teacher. I was pretty good at baking, but couldn't frost a cake to save my life.. so I really needed the basics. It got me enough of the skills (and tools) that I more confident.
I don't like Wilton fondant.. it smells fishy to me. I have made the MMF and like the taste much better. I had a bit of trouble adjusting to it, but have made two cakes with it and it works just fine.. I actually like working with it better..
And definitely watch for coupons in the paper. Cake decorating stuff can be so expensive.. escpecially to get started.

what's a dummy cake??
Faux tiers, used for display purposes, and/or in my case, a cake for competition. Made from styrofoam, they are reuseable, if you take care of them.
