I had asked for Wilton 1A I think it was...darn don't remember. Either way the lady at the cake supply place said she didn't have it and showed me a smaller star tip. I explained I wanted a large star tip (thinking this was what was used for these types of swirls) and she gave me the Ateco "equivalent". But my swirls STILL don't look like this. they're large but not THAT large. I can't get to my tip now for the number but this is dewfinitely the swirl I want.
I was taught to call that kind of tip a "french star" tip. It really looks more like a plain tip with a lot of small ridges in it. It looks like this

and comes in many sizes.
Are those maybe little bitty cuppies?
Hey, if you use the link from TxKat, delete the first colon, :
Those cupcakes are actually done by machine. If you search you tube, you can find clips that show how this process is done. Perfect everytime....I feel like when we cake artist are able to do this by hand, it's such a greater accomplishment.
i had a hard time finding the large start tip individually but bought the wilton cupcake decorating kit and it has a huge star tip in it that i love , while you cannot exactly duplicate the machines swirl you can make really neat things with it, my fav is making the top look like a big open rose.
I do these all the time at work. You guys are talking about the right tips. The trick is to use a little more pressure and it fills the top of the cupcake nicely.

That's a pretty swirl! I'll have to check out 6B.
On a another note, it's kind of sad that people can get their swirls of icing from a machine. I mean.. who wants that? Go to a real decorator! =o)
Am I the only one who thinks it looks like the same cuppie and the icing tops are the same and that the pics look like photoshop?

I'm not sure about that, but they definitely look like the ones I saw in WalMart last night.
I think a 6B would work. It's just going to take a little practice to get them to look like these. Who knows? You might make a "swirl" that you like better. Have fun!!!

Do you think maybe it was done with a decorator comb? I have no idea for sure, but the thought crossed my mind!
