Most of my cakes are either picked up by the customers or my delivery area for cakes I have to set up is pretty local. I live in the country about 15 miles from the largest city so I am used to having to hit the interstate to shop, go out to eat, buy groceries, deliver cakes, etc. I don't charge for delivering and setting up wedding cakes. However I have a bride coming tonight for a consult. She called me about a week ago and is getting married Jan. 17. The wedding is across the state line in the opposite direction that I usually travel. It will be about 50 miles (mapquest says 1 hour) away. I'm not sure what size cake or what her budget is yet (friend of a friends friend). I just thought I should be ready with some kind of price for delivering. Any ideas?

If you go to the governments website it should list what they reimburse for. I think it's 1.25 per round trip mile but I'll check and get back to you.

Hey I just checked and it's only 50.5 cents per mile!! Eeck I charge 1.00 per round trip mile. So I guess use the government or something that suits you I guess.

I charge $1 a mile so if they are 50 miles away I get $100 for the delivery because the trip was 100 miles total.

Ignore the government recommendations. How much is your time worth?

I cahrge beaucoup for delivery. The cost of gas and wear on my car are minor expenses compared with my time.

chutz is right .... ignore the gov't rate. This is a REIMBURSEMENT amount to cover gas and vehicle expense (oil, tires, etc) ONLY. It does NOT factor in such BUSINESS expense costs such as commercial car insurance, hourly rate of the employee (you) to drive the one hour there and one hour back, the value of the lost opportunity cost (while you're delivering a cake, you're NOT at the shop booking or baking another income-producing cake).

I charge $1.25 per round trip mile (so 50 miles there and 50 miles back .... delivery fee is $125.00).

How do they avoid paying $125 to deliver a cake? Pick it up themselves and sign a waiver saying they are responsible as soon as the cake board touches the inside of their car.
