I like this thread!
When I'm baking, I like loud music. I'll crank Bon Jovi or Queen, sometimes some metal. But when I decorate, I like melo. I have a podcast called iCoffeCafe from iTunes. It's free and it's only one track, about an hour of music and it's mellow, kind of jazzy but not so much that it makes me sleepy.

Oh, I also love to do either with re-runs of House on in the background. Gotta love House.

Definately music from the 80's if I need to keep my energy up for decorating. If I need to really concentrate it is Harry Conick Jr, Frank Sinatra, stuff like that. But, if my husband is staying up with me we put in a dvd, usually Harry Potter. Lately the movie has been The Lord of the Rings.

Serenatea - I think a Rivendale inspired cake would just be amazing!

Usually it is quiet when I decorate a cake. I will try decorating with music playing in the background. icon_smile.gif

That would be a pretty cake. Have you seen this Lord of the Rings inspired cake? It's so pretty. http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1167521

Jamalyn - Your from Chico? I grew up there, just moved to AZ this summer. Chico is one of the best small towns around. I tell my friends here that it looks like stars hollow from Gilmore Girls. Brick, trees, all the pretty stuff around Bidwell...

Oh Mike, I like you more and more. icon_biggrin.gif Old school all the way for me...whether it's hiphop or 80s. I put my iPod on and just go. It definitely keeps a flow going and just keeps me focused. Music is such a motivator for me!

I listen to stuff like Marilyn Manson, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Megadeath, 80's hair bands, Alice Cooper, Nickelback. Once in a great while I'll get in the mood for country.

I've been busy teaching my kids what good music is, my 5 year old likes to sing Black Sabbath songs. thumbs_up.gif

I watch movies sometimes and once in a while I'll turn on comedy, Carlin is one of my favorites, but that's when the kids aren't around.

AWhat a great thread. I listen to pretty much anything and everything. Last month I was mainly listening to artists like Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Billy Ocean, and Ray Charles. Now I can't stop listening to Mötley Crüe. But my friends and family find it hilarious when they pop round and find me decorating a really girly pink cake while listening to Slipknot at full volume.

Haha, great choice. Anything loud and fast works for me when I hit the eleventh hour. Iron Maiden has saved my bacon more times than I care to remember.

I work with a younger crowd so Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and everything in between have become my favs.  When I am alone I like classical and slower music (r&b).

But nothing beats alternative and rock to get your blood pumping.

Your welcome. I was going to start a thread exactly the same as this to get to know people but when I found this one I decided I'd just post on this one instead. It's nice to get an insight into how other people work in the cake world and as music is such a big part of my life this thread was right up my street.

Tell me about it. Honestly all of my big orders seem to be when I've had very little sleep. May us going to be interesting. I've got about 20 orders to get out along side my 60 hour per week day job. It's going to be emotional. But it's also going to pay for a Bose sound dock :D so every cloud has a silver lining.

Haha. Yeah I was thinking about just getting a cheap Sony dock with it only being for the kitchen but sound quality is everything to me and I had a Bose sound system in my old car which was really good considering it was stock so I figured it had to be Bose

I just put on the ipod and let it play. i have about 1200 songs so there's a good variety on there. But I cannot go through one day without music.. especially when cooking or baking!

You are so lucky! I can't shuffle on mine! We have a 120 gig ipod that somehow collected all the music off the computer, both hard drives... Not too bad, except it has some serious crap on it from when both my younger and older brothers lived with me. Bloodhound Gang, Teagan and Sarah, to name a couple. Plus, my husband has some questionable taste in punk. Old screamy garage style, that hits the migraine nerve. I like my punk a little cleaner and smarter. Out of 20,000 songs on there, I hate about 10,000! And about 2,000 aren't good for making cakes to.

I have 2 playlists: Cake and Sleep. Sleep has Tom Petty, Keene, Pat Boone, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, lol Stuff that knocks me out. Cake is the rocking stuff.

Never really thought about it. If I were to listen to anything while decorating a cake, I'd probably go with Bach chamber or orchestral music. Maybe the Brandenburg Concertos. I can definitely imagine myself decorating a cake to the 4th Brandenburg, either the original for 2 flutes, violin, strings, and continuo, or perhaps the version by synthesist Wendy Carlos.

I take the time to warm up my vocal chords... I also sing at my church so I listen and practice all the Old... hymns, new songs etc.  They energize me and inspire me on my work.
