Hi everyone! I need help with an idea for an 80's cake. I've already suggested a rubix cube and an atari cake. They didn't go for either of these ideas. Does anybody have any ideas...pictures..etc? I would appreciate any input. Thank you

What about pac man? or a white cake that looks like it has black lace on it w/ruffles (madonna look)? heehee --- what about a miami vice type car w/ palm trees? Or a cowboy hat for Dallas? I dunno....there's 10 years to pick from?

I'm an eighties girl. How about a Madonna cake. You could also do a Wham cake or Duran Duran. You could also do a cake in neon pink or orange with a big "RELAX" written in white.

Or, here's a great website if you want some more inspiration.

http://www.80s.com/default.html

I would love to see a picture of the cake when you're done.

Also, you could do an izod cake or a cake with the MTV logo. Or how about incorporate all those things on the cake.

I knew I came to this forum for a reason. These are great ideas...thank you for your help. I hope the people I'm doing the cake for like at least one of them. I wish they weren't so picky. I appreciate your ideas. gdixoncakes - thanks for the website - it was helpful. I'll definitely post a picture when I'm done.

I was going to ask if it is for a male or female. If female then I would definately do the madonna type thing, gummy bracelets, leg warmers, etc. If it's a guy, the Miami Vice idea is great! I can't wait to see what you come up with! Good luck!

I forgot to mention that the cake is for 2 people - a male and a female. I probably should've started out with that. Those were great ideas about the gummy bracelets and the leg warmers...maybe I can make a sheetcake and do 2 different themes? The cake is for a friend and I'm not getting paid very much for it so I didn't want to go overboard....plus they are being kind of picky. Oh well, we can't all have perfect customers right?

It's always the ones that you don't get very much $$ for that are the pickiest! I want to tell them to go to Walmart and see what they get!!
Anyway, for a male and female, since we don't know much about them...maybe something else that was popular then. Look here, lots of 80s facts, history and entertainment... http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/1980s
I like the Rubiks cube idea too, maybe a FBCT??
Good luck! How fun!

I was born in the early 70's, and remember watching "Lavern and Shirley" also "Happy Days".
Were those the 70's or 80's??
Just a thought " Happy Days " (are still ahead). on one sheet cake with music notes all round it.. Make a the first letter of the girls name like on Lavern's shirt and make it pink and white. Hope this helps!!

I actually told them that maybe they would be happier with a grocery store cake- of course they couldn't get one at the price I'm doing it for. The one good thing is that this will be my birthday present to them so I kind of break even.At one point the husband wanted me to construct a head out of cake and add a mullet to it. Thankfully his wife vetoed that idea. That was a great website by the way..lots of great ideas. I'll have to keep thinking...

Briansbaker - that is such a great idea about the lavern & shirley sweater. I think I will use that for the girl half of the cake. Thank you...could you guys come work for me? lol I usually have great ideas but I have to admit that this cake is turning my brain to mush.

ge978,

You've probably already done this, but you might ask them what their favorite thing was about that time and then go from there. I was going to mention that the movies from that time might help too i.e. Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Top Gun, Romancing the Stone, Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure. The list goes on and on. It sort of depends what they were into whether it was t.v., movies, music, games, or just shopping at the mall (which reminds me of Fast Times at Ridgemont and E.T.). I could go on and on. I won't even mention the heavy blue eyeshadow that is prominent in my senior picture and the baggy, tapered jeans with the subdued stripes down the middle.

I think of Laverne and Shirley as more of a 70's thing. It went off the air in '83 (I looked it up-not that much of a couch potato-lol). Don't forget about cabbage patch kids, Members Only jackets and Jordache jeans. Or big geometric shaped earrings for girls. icon_smile.gif

Wow! You guys are great! Now I think I have too many ideas for the cake..lol. I thought of putting Micheal Jackson on the cake, but my husband thought maybe they wouldn't appreciate it. I think I have the cake narrowed down to a few ideas...I guess you guys will have to wait until I post the picture to find which one I chose. Thank you for all of your help.

When I think of the 80's I remember the shoestrings that were called "FATS"-they were extra wide and came in those crazy colors--neon orange, pink, green--so maybe a male shoe with the fats and for the girl what about the ol' pink and yellow chuck taylor's with (if there's a way to do it) the 2-3 pairs of different colored socks!!--What were we thinking in the 80's???!!!

My husband came up with the best and probably funniest.
The Original Cell Phone....Remember...they were about the size of an OVERNIGHT SUITCASE BAG???
And didn't everyone thing that person must have been soo imporatant and on the cutting edge???

What do you think?

The cell phone is a great idea! I immediately thought of Saved by the Bell...Zach used to carry around this huge phone thinking it was cool. Not that I watch that show or anything lol.

In the spirit of wham, you could do a white sheet cake or a t-shirt shaped cake and write in big block letters "choose life". LOL it would be really simple.

My dad has worked for the phone company for years and he had one of those cell phones! They were huge!! I looked at him and asked "This thing is portable? Where are you going to put it?" I was maybe 8! So it looked REALLY big to me at the time! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif
