Has anyone else gone thru a period where you just don't want to make cakes? I can't seem to get excited about cakin' lately, and I have 15 cakes to make between now and Christmas icon_sad.gif I haven't even been on CC to read the forums in like a month. Has this happened to you? Will it go away? icon_confused.gif

Yes. I'm excited when I book them, when I plan them .... but sometimes when it comes down to doing it, I ask "who booked this wedding and why did they think it was a good idea .... oh wait ... that would be me." icon_redface.gif It's usually during a busy time and I'm just a bit stressed and just want to curl up on the couch with a good Lifetime movie about a wife killing her husband! icon_biggrin.gif

lol Debi! I don't even want to plan them. It seems like a chore! I don't want to charge either. I think it's easier to just give them away. I sure hope this changes soon!

I get lazy and don't feel like doing cakes sometimes either...especially if its one of those I'm sick of doing...another Thomas the Train or Elmo or something....

Yeah I get in cake funks too! Right now I am sick and refusing to do cakes cause the sickness had made me cake lethargic...

Indy: I hear you on the Lifetime movie! LOL!

I like decorating them, but I hate making MMF and I get so aggravated at actually 'baking' the cakes. I wish I could just get handed everything all finished and then proceed to frost and create!

Yep - I have been in a cake funk all summer - am only just now beginning to get a little interested in doing cakes again - and still don't seem to be as in to it as I was - but seems to slowly be getting better so hopefully yours will too! Good luck and {{hugs}}

This happens to me to. I have to absolutely force myself sometimes just to make the d**n cake! Then I keep pushing till the icing is made. The decorating is the fun part and when it's done I'm always happy I did it. Other times it all seems to just happen by magic and I don't have any problems at all doing any of it. I think it's sort of cyclical...some good, some bad, and hopefully the good will always outweigh the bad thumbs_up.gif

Maybe it's time to try something new. This usually happens to me when I get stuck doing a bunch of "Happy Birthday Grandma"s with buttercream roses. Agggh! Maybe look through some books at the bookstore and find something new and fresh to try.

I did that last time. I made a 3d Elmo cake, for free, and didn't even hand out my business cards when people asked me for them icon_rolleyes.gif I appreciate the advice though! thumbs_up.gif

I only do cakes for fun and family and friends, so I don't have much riding on my dedication to it. But
I seem to go in cycles with everything. When I get burnt-out or even bored with something, I move on for a while. Sometimes, I am obsessed with quilting; other times it's sudoku puzzles; then crocheting; then sugar cookies; then miniatures; then polymer clay; then machine embroidery; then mosaics; then genealogy; then photography. When I return to something I haven't done in a while (and I always return), I have a new perspective on it. And I enjoy it again. Some of the techniques, supplies and approaches translate from one hobby to another, which is helpful.
I have read that you can help keep Alzheimer's Disease at bay by teaching your brain new things, so I look at this as a good thing.
I'm sure it's very different for those of you who "cake" for a living. I have the luxury of being able to bake mainly when I want to.
But if you feel you're approaching burn-out, maybe it would help to explore a new hobby and think about something else for a while. Do the cakes, but try something else, too. Research a hobby with the same intensity that you follow the threads on CC. Teach your brain something new. You might feel refreshed from the change in thinking. If you don't have an idea for a new hobby, browse your bookstore's hobby section and see if anything interests you. Even if you don't have the time to actually start a new hobby, maybe it will help to read about something other than caking.

I share your pain -- it's almost like writter's block to me sometimes. Is it the challenge? I get in a funk and don't feel it so to speak but somehow get through it after all. Sometimes it's the customer's demands but often times, it's just me. When I'm in a funk I find that I procrastinate and it gets me in a pinch for time...then the challenge exists so I'm syked again. Vicious cycle LOL! I'd have to say that CAKE FOLK are very artisic and historically many artists get in a funk too. We can't be brilliant every second of the day, LOL! icon_surprised.gif)

I'll come back to you....just remember why you loved doing cakes so much in the first place.

I'm right with you! I still love to design, research and book cakes, but when it comes down to actually executing them .... the motivation is gone completely. I'm not happy with any of the cakes of been doing lately because I know that I could have done them better. I'm hoping now that the wedding crazy season is almost at an end for me that I will have some time to refocus and re-energize.

I have not made a cake in over a month and actually just kinda 'put it out of my mind'...In the beginning I was sooo obsessed with making cakes (which i'm still a newbie at it LOL) - but the last time I had to make a cake was by far, the MOST STRESSFUL cake that I had to "assemble"...but I can tell you this ... it was the BEST TASTING CAKE SO FAR also....

So it is worth it, if you love what you are doing!! In fact, that's why I'm logged in this morning...both of my brothers and my oldest son has birthdays this month - so I am 'getting back in the saddle' so to speak and heaping on the inspiration!!

Thanks to all the 'die-hard' CCer's that encourage us 'little folks'....LOL

Happy Baking!! thumbs_up.gif

I have been in a funk too, I haven't been on here in almost 2 months, which is very unusual for me! I think I just get tired of doing the same thing. People see my cakes and say "I like THAT cake, give me that cake!" but I like to make new and different cakes, that is part of the fun for me!
I have started getting some new cake orders, and that has gotten me back into it a little bit. I guess you will go through fazes, but I think you will get back into it. I never stopped loving it, I just got bored with it, and that brought on the funk. Everything will be ok. icon_smile.gif

Yeah sometimes I will procrastinate like now I need to finish doing gumpaste flowers for a wedding but I don't feel like it. I too wish the cakes where already done and I just decorate. It will pass and I find myself once I get going I'm okay and other times I just don't have a mind to do it. I hate those moments. So you are not by yourself.

I'm going through this right now. I think it is because of all the little things I have to do-like the cleaning up, and the baking, and leveling cakes, etc. I wish I could just have the cakes already baked and iced so I could do the decorating.
I've been telling most people who contact me that I am booked-mostly because I am worn out! Hopefully it will get better soon.

I have been in a funk, too. Although for a different reason than everyone else. My husband passed away in May and he was such a big supporter of my cakes and sometimes was in awe of what I accomplished. That was part of the thrill for me. Well, I had commited to a cupcake cake the end of May and my heart wasn't in it. It was just a get-it-done kind of thing...I sort of swore off cakes for a while, but had a guy practically beg me to do a full sheet in July. Again, just going through the motions...I had nuthin'.
I love this site and all the cakes and ideas here and I am slowly coming back around icon_smile.gif My ex-sister-in-law (we're still friends) turned 60 and I just HAD to do something special for her. After looking at all the Wine bottle cakes on here, I decided to try one and I have to say, I think it's coming back a little. Everyone loved it and I was pleased at how it turned out. I think my honey would've been proud ....
So anyway, I tried to post it here and it is too big or something. If you'd like to see it, I have it in an album on webshots under some of my cakes.

Ya'll are a great support and I do love it here!! God Bless
