Hi CC people!
I need to know the secret to RED Fondant. I have tried and tried again and still I come up with hot, hot ,hot pink. Is there a color combination to get a true red? I am making a cake that is a strawberry so the red part is important! haha. Help? thanks!!
I have acheived red fondant with both wilton no taste and Americolor super red. I color and let it set. Hope this helps. I know there is nothing more frustrating than not getting the color you need.
Get it as red as you can with the red and then add a small dot of drk brown or black. That will darken it up. That is how I got my red lady bug in my pics.

Thanks for the tips! I use red wilton gel colors. I currently have the "Christmas red" color. Is there maybe a better variety of red wilton gel color to use to achieve red? I heard coloring it pink first and then adding red after helps. Anyone?? thanks!
Wilton's "red-red" is the deepest shade of red. But I still end up adding so much that my MMF gets sticky. I usually add 1/4 c of cornstarch when I add the PS.
But I'm going to try the tip about about a little brown...
I've otherwise given up on making red and have started buying Fondarific's red in buttercream flavor (costly but worth it).
I used Americolor's "red red" and it worked pretty well. I still had to use a lot of it, but it wasn't too too bad. I used it for the ladybug cake that's in my photos.
Good luck!
A friend of mine got me started using powdered food coloring for red and black buttercream (don't have to use much and it won't water it down)- I wonder how powdered color would do in fondant?
That is a good question! Where would I find powdered food coloring. Would Micheal's Craft Store have it? Does Wilton carry powdered food coloring?
I haven't seen any at Michaels or from Wilton. I just ordered some from intotheoven. I'll have to try it sometime in fondant!
Is it extremely important to you that the fondant is home made? When I want true red fondant, I buy it from my local cake decorating supply store! I used it for my daughters 1st birthday cake building blocks.. saved me a lot of time, and was quite reliable
Oh yeah. Duh. My Mom gave me some red powder color. Why didn't I just add that to my MMF?? (It's falling apart now instead).
