I finished the clock tower this morning but I keep getting a scan disk is full error when I try to bring up my picture to resize it. I ran a disk clean up but that didn't help. I'm defragmenting now but have to leave for work. Hopefully I can get the promblem fixed tonight and post a picture.

I've been asked to do a Haunted Gingerbread Dog House for an upcoming Barkin Bash. Any ideas??

Thanks!

The little dog from The Nightmare Before Christmas would be cute done in fondant for a dog house. I'd do the house the same as a regular house, boarded up and all that. Have to think of some other ideas....

Now y'all have me wanting to do a house again!

Honey it was challanging to say the least. 20 pieces to put together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Actully putting it together was the easy part. It was cutting them all out and baking that took forever. My stone impression matt wasn't very good and most of the desgin cooked out. My stained glass windows didn't work either. I decorated all the pieces each chocolate covered sunflower seed at a time before I put the everything together. Then entire thing took me about 15 hours with time to try out a recipe for maple leaf butter cookies, do two loads of laundry, two episodes of Charmed on tv and dinner added in. This is only the second time I've ever tackeled something of this size. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The only thing I am disapointed in is that I ran out of black royal iceing so I couldn't do the back section of fence on the top. Otherwise all the sides are the same. I added the bat and ghost to the front only. A big thanks to Mattie for all her advice, to Kelly for the template and to whoever it was that suggested using the candy melts to glue it together. I love that idea, made it so much easier and faster. Hope you like it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it now that it is done. I didn't scale down the template at all and the finished tower is 2ft. 4 in. high.

What is a Barkin Bash? I found this at pupslife.com I don't know if your wanting to do the dog house for humans or for dogs. For humans I would do it basicly like a reg. house. If your wanting to make something for dogs I have several doggie cookie recipes I could send you. We have people come in at work and buy thier dogs birthday cakes so why not a gingerbread house? Anyway it's late and I'm stalling on doing a bathtub cake.

Sherri, your tower looks awesome. You did a great job. I have never tried candy melts to put it together with. Was it easier than RI? Love your bat!

The Barkin Bash is a Halloween party for dogs at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis MD to benefit the dog park. There will be K9 demos and costume contests. My girl scout troop (I'm a brownie leader) went to Fidos for Freedom to see how they train service dogs and we are having a table to sell their calendars, some homemade dog treats (made by the girls) and I was asked to make a gingerbread dog house that we can raffle off.
I was going to do a dog edible one but was concerned about using royal icing so I'm making it for human consumption this time. Maybe next year.

Love the pics! Great inspiration!

Love the Zero idea but I'm not that good (yet!).

It was so much easier. No mixing or powder sugar mess. I just put the candy melts in a disposible bag, closed the end with a rubberband and zaped it in the microwave until they were melted. I snipped off the end of the bag and was good to go. It took a bag and a half for the tower so you could probably get by with just one bag for most houses. I used the light cocoa, but they have some peanutbutter ones what would closely match the gingerbread, or you could always go with white or the colored ones. The best thing about using the candy melts is the pieces where hard and moveable in about an hour.

Okay, I have (what is probably a stupid) question, but with all the cool blueprints and such out for the various gingerbread structures, can these things be made in other mediums like gumpaste for example?

I dont see why not. I have used sugar cookies for an easter house. Gumpaste would work as well.

This is the inspiration I need! I made my first gingerbread house from scratch (not a kit) last year for a local contest, and miracle of miracles, I actually won. Here's my house:

http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1178910

I am gearing up to do another this year and everyone coming into the bakery asks what I'm doing this year, and the woman who runs the event that sponsors the contest asks me how it's going....aggghhh! I haven't started yet! I also have to do a small house for a local publisher that just published a children's book about a mouse who ate a gingerbread house. I've got to get that one done by the 6th. I'm feeling a bit stressed about the whole thing. My goal for my last house was to use no commercially made products in it whatsoever. I actually did it, except for the cotton "smoke" coming out of the chimney. Everything else was homemade from the gumpaste to the gingerbread. I don't think I'll be that ambitious with the small house I have to do, but I really want to do the same for the big contest house this year. I have a feeling I won't be getting much sleep between now and the beginning of December!!!!!

I'm so excited others love gingerbread as much as I do!
I vote for a CC gingerbread category too. All these wonderful pictures need a gallery =)

A couple of things- bobwonderbuns, if you live in the deep south or a humid climate, your house that fell apart was probably stuck together with RI made with liquid egg whites. I only use (after bitter experience) RI made with powdered egg whites. It sticks forever =)

My candy windows would also melt due to the humidity, so I now use Isomalt sugar substitute, which lasts forever. You can buy it online.

I'm shopping for a gingerbread house cookbook with color photos and advanced techniques.
Any suggestions anybody?

I have 3 gingerbread house molds that Longaberger basket came out with in the 90s that I use. You press the gingerbread in, carefully peel out, and bake.

I didn't receive any plans from her. She emailed and said she was updating things.

I am trying to download pics of my haunted dog house. I'm having Kodak Easyshare issues. It came out ok.

I tinted RI a light grey and painted all the pieces with it for a weathered feel. I made black RI and thinned out some to paint the window black. I made two round big white dots for eyes with 2 little black dots and then piped two drooping ears and a pink tongue in the windows that looked like ghost dogs peering out of the house. Put some vines running up the sides. Put candy dog bones and leaves all over the "lawn" of ground up chocolate graham crackers. I would have loved to do so much more but time is a precious commodity.

Bobwonderbuns, this is what we call beginner's luck! I wish I could give you a tutorial, but it was a learn as you go process. I'll try to take pictures this time in various stages of construction, and hopefully have something to share. I'd like to at least share the "don't do what I did" moments to save everyone a headache or two.

Ok I have just read the entire thread and now I think I have been bitten by the gb bug icon_smile.gif

The talent here is amazing and all the great links!

I have a few questions, hope they are not too silly icon_redface.gif

Does gb spread much or at all, like in comparison to a sugar cookie dough?

Is there a specific RI recipe to use or will any do?

I am so inspired by you all, hope I can squeeze one of these in for Christmas!

Thanks.

So glad to know that this thread is still going thumbs_up.gif. I need to really get my rear in gear and or there's no way i'll get this done. as you'll see when i get the pic taken i may have gone a bit overboard on the size icon_razz.gif
