Those vacuum seal things?

I was thinking something like that would be good for storing fondant. I have been throwing away a lot of left over fondant because it dried out even when wrapped in plastic wrap.
Then I recently used Michelle Foster's fondant and I love it! It would be nice to make up a few batches and store it without worrying that it will dry out.

So, if anyone has experience with the Food Saver or has another recommendation I would appreciate your input.
Thanks!

I have one and absolutely love it! I use it for so many things. Lately I have been dehydrating onions and using it to vaccuum pack the jars. Wonderful! It would be perfect for sealing fondant, icings and such and keep them air tight.

After vaccumm packing it, I put it in the freezer and the fondant is perfect when I thaw to use.

They're really great BUT one word of warning - the gaskets around the suction slot thingy can come loose and it's hard to get someone to help you find a replacement if they do. We've emailed Food Saver and have gone to stores to try to get a new one, to no avail. We talked to one employee in a store who said it's common for the gaskets to come loose. Ours came loose and we didn't realize it and we cut it with the bag cutter, so we need a new one. I'd say, go ahead and get one but be more diligent than we were about keeping an eye on the gasket. Then you can reglue it if you need to and won't have to search for a replacement like we are.

Love 'em! I'm on my second one. The first one was donated to make way for a new one with more features. I seal gumpaste and fondant as well as "regular food" - and it works very well.

I love mine, but I ruined my first one by trying to use it on something with too much water. It basically sucked all the water out and then shorted. We contacted Food Saver and they replaced it...apparently it was covered by their warranty. Now if I have something that contains alot of water, I freeze it before using the Food Saver. Should work great for fondant though. I have some sitting here that I was wondering how to keep from drying out....I'll have to try that.

I almost bought one, then found the Vaccum from Reynolds Wrap in the aisle with the plastic bags. I got the one with batteries, and LOVE it! icon_biggrin.gif I use it for all kinds of things. It works great for fondant and only cost $10.00 instead of $130.00 like the food saver... The bags are cheap too.

I've got the food saver and love it. Only problem is liquid items. Cookies with these can be done, and they save perfectly, but you have to be real careful on the timing. Too much air removed with crush the cookies. Not enough, they go dry.

With these you have to use their bags. So if you are looking to display them in the bags, then no. If you are just looking to keep them fresh, I would say yes. It is easy to control the degree of vaccum as long as you pay attention.

I love my FoodSaver. One word of warning - make sure that you really, really clean around the gaskets after every use. We were doing some remodeling and my FoodSaver was stored in the basement for a couple weeks. Our basement is "finished" and I run a dehumidifier down there beacuse it's so humid this time of year, but when I opened the FoodSaver to use it I found mildew around the gaskets. Nasty.

Thank you all for chiming in on this one!

I think I will try the reynolds/glad wrap one to start off. I don't want to spend anymore than necessary until I see how much I use it. Plus space is at a premium. Hopefully, I can save up for the Food Saver! icon_smile.gif
