Hey guys!

I had to scrap two large cakes that stuck really bad in the pan (I didn't grease well enough). I decided to freeze the cakes and save them to make cake balls for my son's bday (he's turning 3) this Sunday. I want them to be cute though. I would also like them to fit in with his party, which is going to be a fire fighting theme.

How can I decorate them to look cute? Also, do they HAVE to be dipped in chocolate? Any good "binders" I can use besides BC?

Thanks a lot!

Amber

you could use a cream cheese frosting I would think.
You could cover them in fondant and put a bill around the bottom and make a fire hat.
Don't limit yourself to the ball shape either. I bet you they would form into a rectangle too. Then you have your fire truck. I'm not sure but they might roll and then you could put fondant on to make a hose.
I would think in order to do other shapes you would need to have the cake mixture frozen just a little. (so it is still pliable)

I made some that were really good with a cream cheese icing.
You could make a cake ball tree and airbrush it to look like flames licking up the tree.

While I realize you said "not dipped in chocolate" just a while back someone had posted some incredibly cute cake balls transformed into really cute cupcakes using a small flower cutter.
I saved that link in a really safe place! icon_cry.gif So safe I now don't know where I put it!! I'll keep looking.
They were kind of like cupcakes on a stick, aka cupcake-cakeball-lolypops! SO cute!

A good binder is coffee creamer. They come in all different flavors, too, so it's fun to experiment. icon_smile.gif

love the little firehat theme.........I always use flavored coffee creamers to bind my cake scraps.....if I don't want to add any REAL flavor I just use french vanilla....goes with everything!

Khalstead, how does the coffee creamer taste in there? I imagine you like it or wouldn't use it. I was just unsure of how it would taste.

I would prepare the cake ball mixture but then spread it out on a cookie sheet, chill it and then using cookie cutters, I would cut them to a shape that would go along with your theme.

If you don't want to use chocolate you could try fondant, Royal Icing would be too sweet for my taste but can be done.

For binders, I have used any of the ready to use fruit fillings, coffee creamers, carmel syrup, chocolate syrup and so on.

I think it would be fun to have flames coming out of them. Like little fire balls. I don't know how you would do it. Fondant maybe? Perhaps, molded candy?

the cupcake cake balls on a stick are adorable! Check out Bakerella.com she made them on the martha stewart show, I'm not sure which month it was though. You really can mold them into any shape though, as long as you refrigerate to get it firm!

I've mixed peanut butter (heated slightly to liquidfy) as a binder and once it cooled off it firmed back up perfectly. Less sweet than BC. Or mix BC with the peanut butter for more sweetness. Yummy! As for shapes the sky is the limit.

I did see where someone has also used the cake truffle mixture as cookie dough and baked it into cookies. They said it does spread some.

I think you are referring to the cake pops inspired by bakerella. If you look on line for bakerella you'll find'em.

Oooops didn't see the above posts...guess they got you the link too. icon_redface.gif

If I am not mistaken, Bakerella also made some cake balls in the shape of footballs. She coated them in chocolate and then piped on the white lacing-looking part. They were very cute and something a boy would probably love!

I made the cupcakes on a stick and some cake balls that were in and on a little bitty icecream cone last week. Did the cupcake ones first and since it was the first time I did cake balls I think that I put to much frosting in. They were really sticky. Even after the freezer. They looked alright though. Then when I did the icecream cone ones, I just put a little bit of frosting and used my hands ( clean of course icon_razz.gif ) to mix so I could feel the texture. I think I only used maybe a cup of frosting for a 9x13 cake. Those were so much easier to work with. I think you could easily do the fire hydrant. That would be so cute!! If you didn't want to do chocolate though...cover in fondant maybe? Maybe poured fondant, although I've never used this....Post pics! Whatever you choose!! Sorry so long!

This may not be suitable for a 3-year old's party, but I have used coffee liqueur with the buttercream and roll in nuts. Well the kid may like this one, I bind with buttercream, but roll the cake balls in Oreo cookies which I processed in a food processer until it's like breadcrumbs. I have done the chocolate and vanilla Oreo cookies.

Cheers!
