getting ready to do one myself in a couple of days. from what i read, most do 3 8'' and a half of a sports ball pan, then carved into the shape. gumpaste is wrapped around wired or brake line for the face guard. i asked a neighbor for his helmet, and i took very detailed pics, using a ruler as a guide in the photos...that way i can replicate as closely as possible.

i'm starting to bake tomorrow, so this should be tons of fun icon_surprised.gif

If anyone has (or has found) a tutorial/instructions for making the football helmet cake, PLEASE post them or send me a pm or e-mail. I did a search in the forums for instructions and lots of posts have existed in the past, but the contents of all of them were apprently lost in the crash.

I need to do a football helmet cake by 9/11 and desperately need instructions. If anyone can help, please let me know.

I baked 2 or 3.. 8 inch cakes..(Can't remember ) I also bought the Betty Crocker bake N fill pan set..one of the pans is an 8 inch half ball pan.I baked one 8 inch half ball (Wilton's is 6 inch)..I stacked the cakes with BC in between and carved the face area out for the face mask.(Dont forget to dowel) Originally I was going to cover in fondant but it was too heavy and began to tear so I did BC instead.I don't use a crusting BC recipe so mine wasn't as smooth as you can get with papertowel and a crusting BC.I made the face mask a few weeks in advance with gumpaste so it was really hard by then.I covered the cake in grey BC and airbrushed it silver as I was doing the Dallas Cowboys helmut.I airbrushed the face mask black a day or so before so it would dry...once the cake was all done I set the face mask in place and finished it with the details...It turned out okay..I wasn't that happy with it but the customer loved it!!

you can try to use a round cake pan and then scuplt the form of a helmet using a picture. thats what i would do. im pretty much agreeing with
mixinvixen.

I have done a couple, mine were smaller and placed on top of rectangle cake. I only used 1 6in round layer and 1 portion of sports ball. (so I half a ball). I placed half ball on 6 in round. Cut small portion of half ball and down the 6 in. so it looked indented a little. Did not really take much off. *(why waste cake). I made the face grill in advance with gumpaste. I have a bowl about the same size as the half ball and taped it to the 6 in pan. Used clay gun to make ropes and shaped on bowl/pan. then let it dry for 24 hours on this mold, took off and let finish drying without mold. gumpaste was really fragile still, but it works. Then after I made cake and placed on sheet cake, would place the grill up to the cake. My cakes were buttercream. good luck, these are always crowd pleasers.

I think you did a fantastic job especially with the face mask. What did you end up using to make the face maskt? Looks like I might have to try one now. Thanks for the inspiration!
