My Gumpaste Flowers Are Cracking...

I just made my first batch of gumpaste roses and day lilies. They turned out better than expected, but even the pieces of gumpaste that started out feeling too moist and a little sticky cracked around the edges. Is this the gumpaste mix that I used or is there something that I can do to keep it moist?
I have the cutout pieces sealed in a container and only take them out one at a time... I thought this would suffice, but clearly not.
When I do my flowers I don't cut out too many pieces ahead of time. Even if they are covered, even in a container, they can and will dry out and when you try to roll the edges with your ball tool the edges will then crack.
Make sure that your adding a bit of Crisco to your hands while your working the gumpaste and also a bit to your area that your rolling it on. This will help. You don't want to add alot as this will make your gumpaste slimey.
I find that when I use my metal cutters the edges of my flowers are alot nicer.
HTH,
Chrissy
