I'm sorry to say this and hate me if u want but If a person has a pet in their home I would not want a cake from them whether they gave it away for free or sell them. That is unsanitary & disgusting, I'm sorry theres no other way of putting it.

I have worked at many local restaurants and most of them were VERY sanitary. There is one in particular where I had not dined before, but I ate lunch there when I worked double shifts. That didn't last long. This restaurant was known for throwing peanut shells on the floor. After a while I noticed they had the tiny roaches in the kitchen. The cabinet like place they stored the garbage cans where the plates were cleaned was so nasty, then at the end of the night, someone had to CRAWL in there and clean it. The pipes in the bar had drain fly larva in it. That was 5 years ago and this restaurant JUST closed. There are other locations open however.

By the way...I hate to be the one to point it out but OP never once stated in her first post the cake was for her & her hubby. I'm not an animal hater and the story is kinda cute, I just think its gross. But to each his own I guess.

It's OK for you to say that if you want. I don't hate you. And, yes, I actually agree with you. icon_wink.gificon_biggrin.gif

Funny thing though, I also NEVER stated it was for public consumption. I guess it's interesting what judgements and assumptions we all choose to make in life.

Otherwise, I've really enjoyed the cat pictures, and dog stories, and clean freaks with their wacky and wild routines. Plain and simple. I had a cat eat my cake. The one for me I didn't rebake, the one for my Sunday School group totally got rebaked.

Here is the final image of the 9" round I had to redo. I'm just glad it was not iced or decorated and I only had to rebake 1 layer. The second layer was still in the oven.

It was inspired by Beanyhunter's Lady Bug Cake

Mine is 2 layers of 9" Golden Vanilla Betty Crocker mix with Simply Fruit strawberry for the filling. It is iced completely with buttercream icing. I don't remember which recipe I used. The base is a very pale yellow, with a mixed green brush striped with a darker green for the vines and leaves. The lady bugs are all piped with tip 12 for the body and chocolate/black with tip 2 for the details.

Thanks again for all the laughs and fun. Even the disgust. I enjoyed the moments with you all.

Uh oh...is that a cat hair I see in there????? HA! HA!

I saw this when you posted it - VERY CUTE!!!

It's funny, I have had pets my entire life and I have managed to stay alive and have not gotten some deathly disease from them living in my house. I don't know what is so disgusting about having a pet in your house. Since I have 2 cats, that would mean the food my family eats on a daily basis was unsanitary as well. Just not the case.

Well, I'm sorry for my assumptions tapedshut.gif You know what they say about people who make assumptions thumbs_up.gif ....On a good note, I think the cake is pretty good looking. Your cake is so leveled, I'm jealous...I can't get my cake leveled like that to save my life (everyone says its because I'm a lefty) Very well done icon_wink.gif

Nice broad statement seeing as how you haven't seen everyone's home. icon_confused.gif I know plenty of people who don't have animals that I wouldn't want to eat food from their homes. Animals don't make your home dirty.. lack of cleaning does. Funny how a silly post about someone's cat digging cake has turned into a let's bash all pet owners because they are disgusting and unsanitary post. icon_rolleyes.gif If you don't like animals then don't read about them.

I have animals.. and a licensed kitchen.. and I don't hide the fact that I have animals from anyone.. not that it matters though I guess since everyone should stay away since everything I make is disgusting and unsanitary. I'd rather have a cake from a pet owner who cleans than from someone who doesn't have animals and has no sense of what clean really is.

I don't know.. I don't normally feed into this sort of a thing, but I guess I am feeling particularly b!itchy tonight and that statement really got my dander up.. very narrowmided and judgemental.

I understand completely and am not trying to bash any pet owners...I actually have a dog but he is no where near the inside of my house. Not to mention the fact that I clean every like u wouldn't believe. And everyone is entitled to their opinion its not being narrowminded nor judgemental!!! And of course I'm not the only person who thought the same thing...and I'm not easily offended so i won't take ur response to heart icon_wink.gif By the way, love your work icon_smile.gif

I clean like you wouldn't believe too.. everyday.. I hate messes and clutter and not a day goes by that I haven't vacuumed twice and at least used the wet jet on the floors and cleaned the bathrooms. If I am baking you'd think I was cleaning my house for the boy in the bubble to come play in.. and it's the WHOLE house.. not just the kitchen. I do agree that SOME people, be they pet owners or not, can't clean and shouldn't cook for others.. but it's not the pets that would make me go eeew.. it's the lack of hygene in general. I guess the most offense comes from the disgusting and unsanitray comment.. my home is far from it.. animals and all. I have a dog and a cat.. both of whom have a nice room in the basement that they spend baking days in (eventhough the state says I just can't touch them while baking.. no kidding right?.. even I was shocked). You'd never walk into my house and say "yup.. they have pets" just by looking (other than the dog bowls).

I have never had one person say "Oh you have a dog.. no thanks". And my cat has greeted customers at many a tastings. Maybe people who are that skeeved out by animals are few and far between? Who knows.. all I know is that it takes more than animals for me to make a decision as to if a person is fit to make food for me to consume.. a lot more.

Sorry to get so wordy.. I blame the hormones I am on. icon_wink.gif

Your right, u know I guess the reason why I was so grossed out is because where I use to work we had this lady who had 15 cats and everyday she'd come to work covered in cat hair and smelling as if that cats just squatted (or whatever cats do) on her and used the bathroom on her...It was so bad and whenever we had functions no one wanted her to bring food or go near the food. She'd have the whole entire office smelling horrific so bad that my eyes began to burn whenever she got close to me. I felt bad for her because the whole office talked so much trash about her and to her face but we couldn't go on in that type environment. I guess the original post just brought me back to that place... thumbsdown.gif I really didn't mean to offend anyone icon_smile.gif

That, I absolutely, 100% agree is DISGUSTING! I will say, though, that most people (SANE people icon_confused.gif ) do not have fifteen pets, unless they're something like fish or something, or they live on a farm and can keep them in the barn.

LMAO...It was crazy because i think about every other week we were having a meeting in the managers office about her...there were about 3 pregnant girls and u know how they can get...so they were always complaining to the manager so we had meetings to discuss her "smell" as he so graciously put it. I felt so bad for her but she said that those cats were like her kids. So I had it in my mind already that if she ever brought any food in I wouldn't eat it. I know that sounds bad but I don't think my stomach would've allowed me to do it.

I didn't have room on the counter to let it cool it was a half sheet cake so I left it on the dining table to cool. I came in and saw a heart shape carved into the corner. I thought my husband was being cute since he knews I cut off the top of the cake anyway. Turns out he didn't do it which only left a cat getting on the table and creatively eating 2 bits that looked like a heart. The cake was salvageable as I had to cut it off anyway.

Ever since that cake I've been very careful not to leave edible cake things on the table. Until tonight! I made a cake, it was perfect. 9" round and gorgeous. I sat on the couch while it cooled and kept the more likely of the 2 suspects close at hand while the cake was cooling. When I got up to to check the check no less than 1 cup of cake was gone from my beautiful round cake. =( Now I know it wasn't my small trouble maker since I kept her with me in the living room. It was my big fat round tubby cat. She quietly snuck up on the table and had time to eat a lot of cake. I never even heard her. My husband said, now you know why she's so tubby.

Moral of the story, get more counter space or cover the cakes when they are cooling.

The culprit is below.

Image

And now I have to make another 9" round layer along with 2 12" layers. It's too late tonight I was hoping to be icing the 9" cake while the 12" was baking. It's a good thing she's cute. icon_twisted.gif

I have 2 cats...so I was amused by this. I could so see my cats doing that. I do put them up when I am baking but like you said, fur goes everywhere so I don't know how much I am helping!!!

I was glad that you shared this. For me, as a person who is owned by 2 cats, I got a good chuckle out of it!

My dogs are like your cats. If I leave anything in paws reach they will eat it. I have a huge walk in pantry and that is where I place my cakes. Door Closed. My cakes are for family and friends only, so don't run a business out of my home.

OMG that IS gross.. No way would I ever leave the house covered in cat hair and smelling of a dirty litter box. It reminds me of this kid I used to work with in the kitchen at a Ground Round.. he was filthy.. just nasty. Long dirty hair that he didn't keep back and dirty clothes. He touched a lot of ppl's food.. and he shouldn't have.

And to the one who mentioned the Androgel.. I am on hormones for an IVF cycle.. I am all over the place and it makes me a little beeotchy at time.. okay most of the time.. icon_wink.gif What is it usually prescribed for?

I find it funny that so many people have claimed to find pets so disgusting and wouldnt want to eat anything made from a house with pets. Statistically speaking, pet owners are known to live longer than those who dont have pets (just google it).

Major reasons cited have to do with stress levels but Im sure the activity a pet provides helps as well. IMHO homes with pets are cleaner anyhow as the owners (so long as they are resposible) are more likely to clean more often than those who think thier homes are clean because they have no pets.

With that said, no house is 100% clean, nor bakery or restaurant. Bugs are everywhere, bacteria is everywhere and people are everywhere (and people can be very dirty too). If either of these where gonna kill us (let along a stray cat hair), it would have long ago. Personally I worry more about all the chemicals and pesticides used on produce than whether my cat walked through the kitchen as I was cooking.

It's actually funny, a lot of people say this (and not wrongly, some of those chemicals have been linked to bad, bad things!) but the recent outbreaks of salmonella across the US have all been traced to "organic" farms...

We're all going to die of something someday. I personally think it's better to accept that and choose your poisons than spend your life unhappy and afraid of what MIGHT kill you.

Like...cake is an acceptable risk for me! thumbs_up.gif
