I have an order for a Fairy cake made from the classic wonder mold from Wilton. You know the one that you stick a doll in. Anyway I thought that maybe I would make wings out of fondant/gumpast and dust them with silver edible glitter and attach them with royal icing. Than I would ice the skirt in pink and wrap the skirt with cotton candy and sprinkle edible glitter on that also. I may cut out some little stars from the fondant and use glitter on them also and sprinkle them around the skirt.

I am open to any other ideas that anyone else may have. Also I am limited on time. It is for day after tomorrow. I have the cake in the oven right now and I will frost it tomorrow.

Any suggestions????????????

That sounds so good! I especially like the cotton candy for the skirt. That sounds really cool!! Maybe you could also make a little wand for her to hold with a star at the end and decorate that with gold luster?

Be sure to sprinkle some "pixie dust" in her hair! Also be sure to post the finished product because it sounds great!

This is going to be awesome, I want to see the finished product! I was going to suggest you add some glitter/pixie dust or something to the dolls face & hair & maybe she should have a tiara. Maybe her dress should have some ribbons flowing down around it & tiny fondant flowers? That may be over doing it. I can't WAIT to see this one! =)

Where are you located? Cotton candy melts in the presence of ANY humidity. Unless you are in an incredibly dry climate--I'm thinking the Sahara, but Phoenix might be OK--I doubt that it will hold up very well for more than half an hour, or so.

The other consideration would be contact with the buttercream--that will also turn the cotton candy into a sticky mess.

You might be able to get away with it if you put fondant on the skirt and don't wrap the cotton candy on it until moments before serving.

I have a fairy cake in my pictures. I used irridescent (sp) tissue paper for the wings, obviously not edible. I wasn't thrilled with the skirt, but I think if there were more layers it would work better.

I always have trouble with attaching the wings...!!! Do you guys make the wings (Fondant / gumpaste)and let them dry before attaching them (and is RI the best to attach it with?) or do you attach them still soft and then prop them up with clingwrap or something, until they are dry???? icon_confused.gif

How do you attach paper wings????? icon_confused.gif

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was wondering about the cotton candy also melting but I thik that I may try it on a cupcake and see how that goes. I will attach the wings with RI. I made the wings last night out of fondant/gumpast and let them dry on crumpled foil. I let you guys know how it comes out. I will pos a pic also. Thanks.

Hi there ALVARGA. you can use gelatin sheets for the wings also. I've not done it personally but I was reading a cake book that talked about making fairy wings and using it. I think they cut out wings and piped royal icing around the edge and attached - light and shiny like wings.

Let me know how the cotton candy works on the cupcake trial. I'm thinking about using it on a princess cake next week.

Cotton candy didn't work so well. On the cupcake I left on the counter the cotton candy melted a little but it also hardened up like crunchy sugar. The one in the refrigerator looked OK but it doesn't retain that airy, puffy look. I wound up just frosting the cake pink, making pink star cutouts of fondant/gumpaste and laying them randomly on the cake. I brushed the stars with a mixture of pink and silver dust mixed with a little vodka. I then sprinkled white glitter over all. It was really cute. The wings worked perfect attached with royal icing and I found a wand in the party section of Hobby Lobby. I then took the silver wired tinsel that has little stars on it and wrapping it around the base of the cake. Overall I was very pleased with the way it came out. Next time I will make the wings a little larger though. I will try to post a picture tomorrow.

Thanks for everybody's suggestions. icon_smile.gificon_smile.gif
