I just got back from Orlando and did the one day shopper pass for the Vendors at the ICES convention. WOW icon_eek.gif I spent a ton and could have spent a lot more. I should have gone for the whole convention but new to all this (less than 8 months). Vendors there that we never get to see anything from here in Florida and a bunch of the Food Network stars were there. Norman Davis was very pleasent and there were 3 others from the challenges there but I never remember names. Lindy Smith was there with some of her items and books and cutters. EVERYTHING you could possibly need. Great deal on Satin Ice. Even a big booth for Global Sugar Art.

My legs are killing me, I walked thru 8 times total and sent my hubby back to the car 4 times with stuff. Can not wait to try our all sorts of new little cutters, rollers, dust brush, veiners, molds jem cutters and a ton more. If anyone is in the area (I drove 2 hours to get there today) it is well worth it. Companies from South Africa, England, Bueno Aries and all over the US and Canada and even Japan.

Off to try out my new stuff and read all the brochures and catalogs I was given when you check in.

I'm so jealous...I was going to go this year becasue it would have been a good combined family vacation/cake shopping trip but I realized too late that I had agreed to do a wedding cake this weekend. icon_cry.gif I went to the Washington convention a couple years ago and the vendors were the best part!!!

After going to this one day I am already planning (hubby doesnt know yet ) to go to the one in Chicago next year. After meeting and seeing all the decorators and bakers from the food network there, either selling or giving classes and they were out shopping just like I was this really is a event to go to.

Was thrilled to get so much Satin Ice and on sale and didnt have to pay for shipping on it!! I am having a blast trying out the moulds and cutters I got yesterday and was thrilled to find out they gave us a mould in the gift bag that each "shopper" got along with a sample size of satin ice.

I wanted to go back again today!! But that would be pushing my luck and my credit card limit way to much. Have a year to save up for next year in Chicago.

Alot of companies there that were from Miami (5 hours from me) and those were the closest. But I have everyones email, websites and catalogs.

Ah, yes.....gotta love shopping at convention! How I envy you! icon_rolleyes.gif

When my friends and I go to convention we take an empty suitcase to bring home our purchases!!! thumbs_up.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif At the convention in Texas a couple years ago we bought 50 lbs of FondX. Found out shipping was outrageous, so we crammed all these buckets of fondant into our suitcases! icon_lol.gif You should have seen the faces of the luggage guys at the airport when they went to lift them! Abso-freakin-lutely hilarious!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif We laughed about that for weeks!

So do tell.....what was the new gotta-have "toy" for this year?

And yes, Norm Davis is a real sweetie. That's what I loved about the ICES decorators....they all (mostly) are so nice and more than willing to tell you anything!

Since I am a newbie they were all the "new toy" a lot of Jem cutters, alot of shoe molds/cutters. A lot of dusts, japanese silk fondant gumpaste.

I walked thru so many times and each time I saw something new but most of it is all new to me.

Very pleases with the first impression mould that they gave us in the goodie bag. I tryed to buy some stuff from them but they just took my slip and never could get them to fill it but now that I have tried the one they gave me for free I will go to there web site and buy some things.

Cant wait to try the shoe cutter/mould i got. It is the only thing I have not tryed yet from what I have bought.

Wasn't it GREAT!?! I flew in late Friday night, worked at my friend's booth on Saturday & flew out Sunday morning. That was my 1st time & OMG I am even more excited for next year now. I didn't shop as much as I would have liked because a) we were so CRAZY BUSY & b) it was just so overwhelming & hard to take it all in with the little time I had. Next year I am going for the whole convention & since it's closer & I'll be driving, I won't have to worry about needing an empty suitcase. LMAO.

Shaddi--
Unfortunately we cannot post the convention cake room pics without the consent of the decorators.

I know that TCTurtleshell will be posting some pics on her MySpace.

Yes, It was amazing. I bought one of Bronwen Weber's CAke Study for the topsy turvy cakes. Looking forward to making one of them. And I bought one of Mike McCarey's DVD on sculpting cars "Cakenology".

As for the Food Network "stars", they were: Mike McCarey or Mike's Amazing Cakes, Norman Davis of "The Sweet Life", Kerry Vincent, Bronwen Weber, and Nicholas Lodge.

This was my first ICES convention! I went Fri, Sat. & Sunday by myself and voluntered to work at the demos. I met way more people that way, got to spend a lot of time with each of the presenters and see everything up close during set up and ask questions. Everyone was super nice to me. I learned an enourmous amount of techniques and I'll need a couple of days to rest my poor feet and absorb all the stuff I learned. I spent way to many $$$ at the vendors of course, especially Sunday afternoon when they were cutting prices 50% and more... almost went into sugar shock from all the great deals. Ordered a lot of stuff to be delivered that was not available, but they have free shipping if they are out of stock at the show. Now I'll have little goodies coming for a month or so to keep the high going.

Oh Boy! This sounds exciting to me, since I live in a Chicago suburb and it won't be much of a drive for me. Do you know where in Chicago it's going to be. Do you need a venders pass to get in? Thanks.

St. Charles, ILL

Check out the ICES website to find out more--
I know they will be doing a tour of WIlton's. Can't remember all the particulars about where it's going to be held and the hotel reservations but if it's not on there already, it will be soon.

This is a bit OT, but is anyone out there a member of the ICES? I was considering joining, but I wasn't sure what the benefit is to it? Can anyone give any insight on that? I went on the website to see if you can sign up for their newsletter, and that is only an option when you join... but I don't know that it's worth the $60 fee for just the newsletter. I definitely want to be notified of the ICES convention next year since it's in Chicago... much closer for me!!

I'm holding the registration info I got this weekend at the convention about next year. Registration for the convention will cost $190 for ICES members and $330 for non-members. It pays to join ICES!

I think Indiana has a very active ICES group, so it would definitely be worth joining. I'll look through my stuff... pretty sure someone gave me a registration form for an upcoming event. I know they have a website too.

I too just returned from a combined short vacation with daughter and did the one day pass to ICES, and wished I had signed up for the entire convention. I found out about it last minute, so was glad to be able to even go for a day.
Was wonderful to see the products up close and watch the vendors demonstrate. Did any one else try the flavored fondants from Fondarific?
Very tasty, and lots and lots of flavors and colors. Also a vendor selling cake dummies very very reasonable. Can't wait for next years in Illinois. Was told it was going to be at a resort. Great to save yourself the shipping prices on items, and some vendors would ship orders after the show free shipping just for ordering at the convention. Even for a semi-newbie like me, it was great so those of you who are new to cake decorating don't let that intimidate you.

Edna--
Not sure about blogs--especially if any are the Disney cakes. I just know on CC, you shouldn't post them. But ask Jackie or Heath to be sure.
BTW--sorry that TC and I didn't get to meet you.

CHICAGO?!?!? icon_eek.gif I was just there last month on a business trip and loved the city. That's only an hour drive to the airport and an hour flight . . . wheels turning in my head . . . I soooo want to go to an ICES convention . . . and I want to go back to Chicago . . . I've got to start saving and planning NOW!

I thought Chicago was close, but St. Charles I am right next door to. The only place in St Charles that holds conventions is "The Pheasant Run Resort" Now I definitly will be going. I never stayed there, but I have been there many times for craft shows, car shows, etc. AND you people are in for a treat if you go across the street to "Portillos" for a real Chicago style hot dog, or a Italian beef sandwich. If you can't get booked at Pheasant Run and still want a resort to stay in, try Indian Lakes in Bloomingdale about 10 Miles from PR. Also there is quite a few smaller hotels/motels around.
