Calling all CC'ers...Who have you seen here that has the neatest, most creative may of writing on cake???

I have seen some nice handwriting but I don't have time to go through the 1000's of cake pics. Unfortanetly you can't do a search on "creative handwriting".

My cake handwriting is ok. I have seen much better and I have seen a lot worse. Lets face it...handwriting can make or break a cake no matter how well it is decorated. Ideally I would love to see a template of different styles of handwriting. There is one in a wilton book but they are more traditional.

What prompted me to ask this question is that I have a 9X13 cake order for a 13yr boy with white icing and red trim and they only want Happy 13th B-day Vance no characters. (Sounds boring to me.) So I decided to go wild with his name and make it grafitti like and cover the entire top of the cake just with his name and the Happy B-day will be on the front edge.

Happy cake decorating,
Michele

Wow, that cake sounds like it will be really cool!
When working with fondant sometimes I like to use alphabet stamps to create different/funky letters. Depending on the design I either leave the embossed letters as-is or pipe over them. You can get stamps at any craft store in the scrapbooking section.

I haven't dived into the fondant world yet. I tried fondant on a doll cake and it was a total disaster. I need to work with someone or take the course 3 Wilton class.

If I want a new font I go to fontz.com and look at the new ones. They are free to download. I print what I want on the cake, cover it with waxed paper, and pipe it in royal icing right over the printed version. after drying I lift if of and place it on the cake. I really like the 3D effect that gives as well.

That's a great idea! How much breakage do you get. I so don't trust royal icing!

Check out this site...totally free and you can preview what you want it to look like (ie. if you want to see how the font looks when spelling happy birthday you just enter it and it is generated)

I use this design a lot when the customer doesn't want any flowers or characters. It can be done in so many color combinations and is bright and festive without being too fussy.

I'm a big fan of the monotype corsiva font which I use for colorflow monograms all the time (see one in my pix.) Also you can use tappits which I believe is the same if not a similar font to the monotype corsiva. In my pix I did a shoe and purse cake and used tappits for the writing on the board -- you can see what it looks like. Hope that helps some! icon_biggrin.gif

I get very little breakage. If its a long word like anniversary i pipe it all then make a "break" so it will align perfectly when i pick the 2 pieces up.

so do you do a break for the curve of a round cake if you're doing a round? i'm trying to understand. or would you place your "paper" on a round pan to get a nice curve for it??? i love the sound of the idea just trying to picture it in my head.

I use royal icing on parchment paper all the time too. I have a font/clip art package on my computer at home. I just write what I want it to say in the TONS of different fonts, print it out and stick it underneath my parchment. I can also size the font to be the perfect size for what I am working on.

Also, I just thought of something that would be kinda cool. What if you took a square cutter, and cut a bunch of different squares. Then took your letter cutter and cut the letter out of the middle, taking care not to rip any. Then if you want a graffiti look, take your boxes and cut and pull the outside boxes until they are misshapen. Arrange the letter into the middle until its slightly askew. Take your letters and arrange them all right next to one another.

Would be even cooler if you used marbled fondant.

I have a question about writing with royal icing on parachment paper. I'd like to try this, but I'm making a guitar cake with the Wilton pan and don't think there is enough room on the cake so I would like to put it on the cake board, do you have any ideas on how I could get it to stay on the cake board?

Thanks!

Debbie

Lady-pheonix can you do that with 'thin' piping? I want to use a tip#2 to write, do you think I will still be able to lift it off the paper and put it on the cake without it breaking?

Debbie, you can pipe it directly on the board, then you wouldn't have to move it or try to get it to stick. It will dry to the board.

I have done so a few times. Just very very carefully! I also pipe the words more than once just in case I break one.

Or you can just adhere it with a small dot of RI here and there on the back of the writing and stick it on.

Don't forget to watch out for the copyrights of those "Free Fonts". A lot of them are for personal use only! If you use them on anything you will sell for a profit, then you first have to either ask permission or register for the "full font package".

Great ideas from everyone. Love the graffit site below. I wrote the name below by hand using a style of font I saw on the computer. It is a FBCT that I tried for the very first time. It is ok. I need more practice.

Thanks,
Michele

Michele,
I think your FBCT looks great. Did you find it difficult? I have been trying to get the courage/time to try one...( I don't mean to hijack this thread)
