I'm tempted to order some just to see what they're made out of . . . they'd have to have some type of ingredient list wouldn't they?
I'm w/ Honeydukes - sounds like some form of marshmallow, from their list of ingredients. Maybe they're poured in some kind of mold, in the same fashion as when making candy in molds? But lasting forever???-don't know about that!!?
All that aside, I think they are very creative people w/ a new concept.
It's kinda funny how they put a photo of Martha Stewart Weddings on there. Not that they claimed to be in it or anything, but when you first see it you think "wow! Were they in that magazine?" And then you just see that "Martha" suggests doing cupcakes for weddings.
LOL
I don't think they are that bad. Some of them are pretty. But I could do it myself.
Haha, I noticed that too. Pretty sneaky if you ask me.
It seems too close to "cheating" in my opinion... oh well
Reminds me of a Dr. Suess movie or something....
They are likely a form of gumpaste...
I don't like them, and I think we can all agree we can do just as well ourselves..and I think I have seen them in "Martha" layout........
They have to be hard to keep it's shape, could it be like a RI? Of course fondant could be too, b/c it does say they soften slightly after sitting on the cupcake. I would hate to bite into one & break a tooth.
I'm thinkin'...with the gelatin in the ingredient list, that it's mmf...not rbc. I know it says it isn't fondant but some people believe that mmf isn't fondant at all but sugared up marshmallows.
I think it's great that they're trying to maximize sales on an item.
What bothers me is the "patent pending" statement....are there going to be issues with other decorators using this technique(some have been doing it for years) on their cupcakes...or is it they can't call them cupcake caps?
Is it going to be similar to the issue with the cupcake shop owner and her (I say this laughingly too) "copyrighted" cupcake cheeseburgers?????
It's interesting that it ranges from $1 - $2 each one. I think it could get really costly to do these for any decent size amount.

I wonder...Honestly, I have been covering cupcakes with fondant (over a smoothed dome of B/C for some time now...I am thinking they must be talking about the name? I know Elissa Strauss at Confetti cakes has done this style of cupcake for years!
I don't think they are that bad. Some of them are pretty. But I could do it myself.
My thoughts exactly!
I too think it would be the name not the technique. How could someone say you can't decorate your cupcakes like this. But they don't say what it's made out of so how would someone know if they're making the product or not
I dont know about the patent..What is she patenting..the designs are not original.. And It looks like a fondant cut out..Im not trashing her work...they are really cute. I am just wondering whats being patented..
I don't know either...
Do ya'll recall the cupcake cheeseburger design issue a while back?
A CCer had posted some that she(the CCer) had made on her(the CCer's) website. The owner of the cupcake shop contacted her that she was infringeing on her copyright...that she owned the copyright to that design...OSLT
Those are cool and I can see how they would appeal to the non-decorator. But as for us, we could easily do that ourselves and save the $1-$2 per CC cost. I would think she is marketing that to the non-decorator type person who maybe likes to bake, but can't decorate to safe their life.
The patent seems a bit weird. Like others have said, people make this kind of stuff all the time for their cupcakes and sell them with it on it. I just don't see how she would patent something like this seeing as other's can prove they've been making and selling them already. Maybe she is patenting the recipe, but I didn't think you could do that either? I don't know, sounds weird.

She's taking ownership of the name(Cupcake Caps), not the product.
You can't patent an idea. (trust me, I'm sitting in the patent office of our law firm as I type this)
It states on another web site that "Their closest cousin is a marshmallow."
And like others have stated, it's something the majority of people on this board could do themselves. But just like any other ready made frostings, decorations, fondant, etc., she thought it would be a great idea to provide them to people who didn't have the time or just don't want to make them on their own.
I think its a neat idea. I'ts not for everyone, but its no different that covering cupcakes or cookies in fondant.
Thanks for clarifying mcelromi1. As I stated earlier, I too think it's great that she found a way to market the item. Royal icing roses come to mind now...I know they're sold everywhere but dang, that's one thing I would love to sit around and make all day and be able to sell them...oh yeah.

I don't know about patenting a recipe, but you can copyright it. The ingredients for it are not copyrighted, but the directions to put it together are.
These are definitely targeted at the time pressed non-decorator. I have had Cupcake Caps at several events. They allow someone who is not a stellar decorator to have a beautiful dessert that matches the theme (e.g. football parties, baby showers, etc.). Fancy cupcakes from local bakeries are more expensive than these so it is also an affordable way to go upscale. Even better, you can make more than one kind of cupcake so people can choose to eat what they want while keeping the look uniform. While I don't know what they are made of, they are tasty. However, as a poster above pointed out, there are people who prefer to peel them off, lick the frosting off the back and eat the rest of the cupcake. I even know one person who doesn't like cake & just eats the Cupcake Cap!
I used these cupcake caps for my daughter's b-day party about 6 months ago. I'm a busy mom and not skilled at cake decorating. I wanted something different then my usual messy homemade cake or a store-bought cake. We chose the pearly pink (which is a bit sparkly), with a flower stamped in the middle, and put them on strawberry cupcakes.
The kids LOVED them. The moms wanted to know where I got them b/c they were such a hit!
These are a great idea for busy moms like me who want a bit of homemade with a finished, unique touch. TRY them before dismissing them!!
I think these look okay and do fill a need if people are pressed for time and have lots of money.
What I don't understand is why bother making a cupcake to put them on. What if they don't compliment your cupcake flavour?
What if they taste nasty to you and nice to another?
If you are going to spend a dollar on a cupcake cap why not just buy a whole cupcake.
Why cover your own homemade cupcake with a plastic looking manufactured topping?
How about using gumpaste to make your own cap mold and then just cutting out your fondant circles and pressing them into your gp mold yourself, cheaper in the long run.
I guess the only benefit these have is they save time and cover up your lovely homemade cupcake if you mess up the frosting yourself!

They look like they are made in some sort of candy melt mold.
I don't know. I'll stick to my good ole icing to die for on my cupcakes.
I like the idea, and too wish I had thought of it first. Not everyone can do everything. I am sure their target is busy people in a time crunch, and they fit that population just great. I have never seen them until today, but to each his own.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. My thoughts instantly.
I personally do not want to eat anything which will last forever. Give me something with real cream or butter in it which goes bad if you don't eat it right away.
It just makes me want to try it less....I don't like the deception. I would prefer a "hey, this is my company..I'd be happy to answer some q's about my product."
I didn't think of the bad aspect of it lasting forever...ew. Though it doesn't stop me from eating Mickey D's fries!
I don't want to at them either!! Just like the idea of them. I could see them for strictly decoration purpoese, but not eating!
Brooke here.
CupcakeCaps.com is mine.
Those "rave" posts are not mine. They are actual customers (and they both have pics on the scrapbook page of the website).
For all the nice things that were said, during this post, thank you.
For all the not so nice things... well... I guess everyone has on opinion.
: )
These are mostly targeted at the non-decorator although we occasionally fill wholesale orders for caterers and other foodie types.
At the end of the day, isn't it all about making something yummy and pretty that people enjoy? I know that's my goal.
Cheers to all,
Brooke
