I had a client who was doing a renewal of vows, and she was going to throw herself a huge party because they'd done the justice of the peace before. So she told me that she couldn't find anyone in her area to do this cake that she wanted, and she was willing to pay me to travel to her area if I'd do it. "It" turned out to be the entire staircase extravaganza, but with a delightful twist...

Instead of the fountain, she had a collection of 10" tall porcelain stautes of the Disney Princesses and their Princes dancing, and she wanted them in the space where the fountain would be, and on top of each satellite cake. The top of the main cake would have a sugar castle on it, of course. The rest of the cake was going to be decorated with yellow icing roses and those gold foil leaves, with lots of yellow swags piped on all over it. I will add that this is so far from my usual decorating style I can't even explain it to you.

So I did it, because she was really nice and REALLY wanted this particular cake. She said that it was based on a cake that had been in a store window when she was little, and she remembered looking at it and thinking how gorgeous it was. She patterned the entire party around the cake, and she had it set up in its own separate room at the reception site. As I was setting this monster up I just kept my head down and worked fast so that nobody would have the time to ask me where I worked...She was SO happy with the cake even though it was totally horrifying to me. icon_lol.gif

When you make your client THAT happy and estatic about your work, then you should never be horrified ... you should be the proudest you've ever been about making a client THAT happy!

I guess I can't say that I hate the fountains and stairs, to each his own, but I don't get it either. I mean, what are the stairs? Staircase to heaven someone said? Well that reminds me of a funeral, not a wedding. No offense, but that's what it makes me think of! LOL! And water under a cake? I know it won't, but it makes me think that it is making the cake soggy.

I got married in 2002 and we chose a very simple M. Steward-inspired design with rolled fondant ribbon roses cascading down and nothing else (I used to have it as my avatar). The colors of the soft pink roses matched my bouquet and I had a little bit of ribbon rose kind of embroidery around the top of my dress, which was very simple too. I'm a simple gal. icon_smile.gif

My sister who planned her wedding in 1995 (it didn't happen then; she got married to her new guy last July, 07/07/07) had a dress with a huge butt bow too! LOL! It was a sign of the times I guess. Her wedding last year was very simple, in a little ceremony in the woods. She wore a plain dress she made and he wore pants a button-down shirt, very simple. Amazing what a few years can do to your taste.

But, if I had a customer who wanted stairs and fountains, well then that is what I would give her.

Being a baby-boomer, I have been witness to all the styles from the 50's to the present.
I hated everything from the 70's, especially the movies.
I must say though, I love frills, buttercream swags and roses, the look is dainty and sweet. Reminds me of those easter dresses as a little girl, crinolines to poof out the skirt, lacy socks, and white maryjanes.
I also like the sleek modern cake style, but I tell you gals that refuse cake orders because you don't like fountains or whatever, isn't it kind of dumb from a business standpoint, to refuse work/money because "that kind of style is beneath you"?

The only decision Phil made for the wedding was the color of the guy's tux's. That's why he's not allowed to make decisions anymore. I made the cake. Hey i have to agree that the whole fountain pillar thing is outdated. When my parents got married they had the same thng it was horrible but that was in the 80's
And indydebi's wedding dress looks just like my moms even the hat and the lace!

Ok...I kid you not. I had a friend from high school contact me about a cake that she wants me to do...Three tier, pillars with space between for flowers, two satellite cakes with stairs going to the satellites with people on them!!!! I didn't think much about it at the time but now that I have read through this threat I am wondering how I can tactfully tell her that it may not be the best option...This will be her first wedding and I don't want to squash her dreams but I would hate for her to regret her choice in cakes down the line...her colors are white, black and royal blue...any thoughts? BTW...this is my first wedding cake and obviously my first set of stairs...please don't make me do them! I'd rather use tuk n ruffle!!! Maybe even a fountain...BTW...My name is heather and I like basket weave... icon_smile.gif

Oh, I love basketweave. Maybe not for a wedding cake, but when they have the flowers all over the top, it looks really pretty.

However, the plastic stairs and fountains and stuff... maybe for a kid's cake.
Although, drowning the bridesmaid or something would be pretty funny icon_lol.gif

Ewwww!! Makes you wonder where that marriage is headed. icon_lol.gif

This was my wedding cake so I guess that means you know where we are heading??? Just because people choose a different path from the rest of the herd it doesn't mean there is something wrong with us!

See, I think YOUR cake has an actual THEME going on that WORKS with the red! I like it, "Till Death Do Us Part"... Heh, AWESOME... The randomly red fountain would just be out of place creepy, but you had a LOT of red going on, so it worked!

Yes, your cake it definitely went with the theme. I love it, you guys look like a fun couple! This was a classic white tiered wedding cake (though the bride swore up and down she hated "traditional") The ONLY thing on the cake that was red was the blood-red fountain. And I hate to say it, but the situation they're in (broken up "for good" and hated each other a mere two weeks before the wedding, they didn't remember to hire a minister for the wedding day) it's where that marriage is headed.

Kinda hate to mention this but the wedding cake I did this weekend was over a fountain! (latest one in my pics) I went to set it up and asked the facility manager "Is the table near an outlet because there's a fountain with the cake." She said, "A fountain? We dont' get many of those!" icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I love messin' with the minds of couples who "try" to tell me "we're just not traditional people!" I swear to you, I lean back in my chair, fold my arms, look over my glasses and say, "You wearing a white dress? Tuxes? Friends all dressed alike standing there with you? Ceremony in a church? WIth music? Photographer? Inviting all your friends? Friends who are bringing gifts? Gifts ... now I KNOW you're into THAT tradition! So-o-o-o-o-o-o-o...... tell me again what part of "traditional" you're not?" we all end up laughing, but it puts a little touch of reality in their heads. (Sorry, darlin', you're not as different and "special" as you'd like to think. You're just a bride, like all the others! icon_rolleyes.gif )

I Love basketweave....I also love combed sides of cakes! I tell my class that if it's between a completely smooth cake and my own sanity, my sanity wins out! I love basketweave on top of cakes too, like for a purse or the baby buggy. Especially when done neatly, not heavily as is often the case when people squeeze too hard and move too slow.

I love all the fountain and stair case pictures on here! I mean, these cakes really make a statement...and they have to be exceedingly labor intensive (I've never done one). I see some really pretty little cakes in the galleries, and especially the ones with just fondant and then ribbon around them...and I think....how easy do we have it nowadays? I don't think I could have kept up back then....I mean you'd have to be some kind of architectural engineer to get it all lined up and functioning! I salute all you who have done these ultra high-maintenance cakes!

Thanks to those brave enough to post your pics of your paneled-wall receptions too. Why does everyone's husband's look 25 years older than the brides??? Is that what corflower blue and two-tone tuxes does to a man? (Or maybe it's the Tuk-N-Chuckle).

This thread has given me the giggles for this evening. I did a fountain cake less than three years ago complete with stairs, bridemaids and groomsmen. What's more hilarious is that people ohhhed and ahhhed over it, lol.

A good friend of mine was at a bridal store that was closing and told me she had bought me a ton of "COOL CAKE STUFF", that was on clearance. She didn't want one penny for it, "just wanted me to have it".

Well, I went and picked it up and low and behold it was an ENTIRE set of the crystal getup. Pillars, plate, stairs, bridge, etc. I smiled and thanked her and brought it on home. Anyone want it?

Y'all make me laugh so much!

I went to a wedding in 1994. Cobalt blue bridesmaids' dresses (strapless, with beaded bolero jackets for the cremony), hot pink stargazer lily cascading bouquets. Mmmm.

The cake had plastic stairs and a dark purple fountain. The purple water splashed on the little satellite cakes, and in the dim light, it kinda looked like vampire blood. I couldn't eat it.

I am literally LOL here. I like some things of the fountains, not the stairs as much. I find something I like in EVERY cake I see even if it's something I wouldn't choose. I'm laughing more at the comment over being MORTIFIED over the hair doos. Too funny.

Yes times and styles change but somehow have a way of creeping back around. Maybe in a few years we'll see a topsy turvey over a fountain? Hahahahahahahaha. Ya never know. Have fun with the cake is all I say and if it sells make it!!!!!! Can you all tell that me and Indydebi are similar in age?

This is too funny!!! My sister-in-law have the whole get up at her first wedding. We are not that close, like oil and water, so I make fun of her alot. (so does my husband, his sister) I think that may have been the straw on the camel's back. They only lived together 6 months and divorced in about a year. This was in about 1999-2000. Little late in the trend area.
