What Do You Wear When Delivering A Cake?

these coats are so adorable!!! guess what I'm ordering today
I usually wear nice pants and a polo shirt. I'm getting polo shirts with my name embroidered on them...thought that would be casual but nice for most delivereies, but maybe a coat like this for more upscale events!!
I did a search on Google and found this site:
www.happychefuniforms.com
Their prices are excellent and they have a ton of styles. They have a short sleeved coral (pink) jacket that I'd like to have. It's way too hot here to wear long sleeves, even in the winter! Anyway, what I'm most interested in are the 'chef's scrubs'. They're way affordable and I think they'd look great when I'm dealing with customers in the shop , plus they offer embroidery .
If anyone is interested in running something up on their sewing machine ( I know that we all have tons of time on our hands...) here are some currently available patterns:
McCall's M2233 & M4529
I like that there is a shorter sleeve option as well.
I wear my polo shirt with logo on it and a pair of capris. If my employee comes with, she wears the same company polo shirt.
Thanks miss_sweetstory! Joann's is having a sale from July 3-6 on McCalls patterns too!
I've always been of the "look professional as possible" train of thought.
When I was still a hobby decorator my "delivery uniform" was kakhi pants and a burgandy polo shirt. Later, when my shop first opened, I wore a tan apron with my business logo over the tan pants and burgandy shirt.
At this point in time, I wear my white chef's coat with black pants. (but I've been dying to get myself one of those pink coats! )
I shy'd away from wearing chef coats because I didn't want to insult those who really were "real" chefs, until our CC culinary grads convinced me in previous threads that it's ok.
So I throw my chef jacket on when I deliver, and yes, it really does make a diff in how people react to you.
I stopped wearing makeup a couple of years ago. Working in hot kitchens, lifting lots of heavy equipment in and out of vans, up and down stairs .... I spent too much time wiping the sweat off of my face and all the make up with it. So I just stopped.
Eh, what the heck! I'm fat, I'm married ... what do *I* have to look good for?

For real though! If all I gotta do is keep that thing on a hanger waiting for me to toss it on--sometimes covering up messy clothing--I mean you are not only that much more ready for your next delivery you do get treated with a measured amount of more respect. Bring it on. Can use all I can get.
I'd love a great source for colored chef coats.. seems all you can get are white black, pink, and denim. I would love a chocolate brown women's style chef coat. *sigh* I'll probably have to make one. *blah*
I avoid black at all costs as it tends to attract all of the white icing in my vicinity! HA HA I just try to put on something neat and clean - you know... not blotched with food coloring and streaked with buttercream. I rarely see anyone when I deliver a wedding cake anyway.
I have a really nice chefs coat with Simply Cakes over the pocket. It is 100 percent cotton, with the air holes under the armpits and 3/4 sleeves. I bought it at http://www.allheartchefs.com/ which I just LOVE! It is easy to work in, very cool, and very comfy. I wear it for deliveries, and when I do shows. My DH wears a polo shirt with Simply Cakes over the pocket, and khakis and my step son when he helps wears a t shirt that says "offical cake tester" which really gets a good laugh!
I have noticed that people do respect you more if you are wearing the chefs coat, even if I didn't "earn it in school" like a lot of people think you should. I earned it other ways (although I am going to culinary school in the fall, so I guess I will earn then too) I also wear the really light weight chefs pants.
I used to go nice and dressed up and found I ruined too many silk blouses with buttercream. The coats wash up nicely too!!

LMAO...you need to quit!
tee hee
Hey, Debi, maybe we're long lost sisters..........I'm fat and married, too!!
I don't trust a skinny chef/cook/baker. So be fat and proud!!!
Also fat and married and OLD. And loving it.
I wear a custom made coat from crooked brook, but for an unbelievable range of colors and options in chefs coats, try Culinary Classics. I would call and ask for a catalog because their website doesn't lay out all of the possibilities very well.

I'm dying for a 3/4 sleeved coat. I looked but I didn't see the one you were talking about. Can you help?

Culinary classics has them. You can choose any style and have the sleeves cut to 3/4 either with cuffs or without.
I wear my denim chefs jackets, since I earned it, I don't feel guilty wearing those.........LOL
I pair mine with black pants and my balck Klogs- love them too! Hair tied back, minimum make-up.
I got mine from the Uniform Warehouse, their website is: www.shopuniformwarehouse.com
I love their prices and the denim jackets are so comfortable to work in as well. Mine have been washed so much, they are now extra comfy!
Sorry had to edit a dash at the end of the website address!
jkalman - buy a white one and dye it brown. it's super easy, i do it all the time with all those barbie pink dresses my in-laws send my daughter.
I have a red chef coat and some white ones with black buttons. I wear the red and whoever my assistant turns out to be that day will wear white. Khaki or black pants. Hair pulled back. minimal make-up, always some earrings.
I have gotten so many compliments about how professional I look and how other cake people, 'show up in just whatever' so I'm not changing it!
One thing I would like to change is I wear a mans coat because I'm so tall (6'1") and the womens look silly on me (apparently women aren't suppose to be tall). I was thinking about finding a seamstress to maybe pin in the sides or something so I don't look so straight! Everywhere I've called is reasonable in price, but it takes 2-3 weeks! I don't have that much time...

Do you wonder whether somewhere, there's an alterations forum and an alterations person is complaining about a cake decorator who doesn't seem to realize that good alterations are custom work and take time?
(I love the idea of a red coat for the boss, BTW.)
I happened across this doing a Google search and just thought I'd share. It's not brown or red, but burgandy and at a great price. I haven't checked the s/h charges, but I thought I'd share.

Pink chef coat with logo embroidered on it.
People do treat you differently based on your appearance. If you appear professional, they will treat you as such. Imagine a limo driver showing up in jeans and a t-shirt vs. a nice suit. Granted he's only driving you, and his clothes don't affect his performance or how he does his job, right?
But honestly, which would you want to hire or take you to your venue?
i dont think that the venue or style of the reception should affect what you wear. your projecting the image of your company and you never know who you will run into.
as a chef, i dont findit offensive for a proffessinal (and if your charging for it then thats what you are) to be wearing a jacket. thats just egotistical chefism. wear it and be proud

Oh I'm sure it is! I'm whollly incapable of using a sewing macine and would prefer a safety pin to hold on a button then thread a needle. I have a lot of respect for someone who can do that and still make it look like clothing.
I have asked though and they say that you drop it off and it essentially waits in line, the actual alteration would only take about an hour. so I've asked if I could get put in line and then they could call me when they are ready. I suppose I could wear the white coats for a few weeks, but people know the red!
try

or

I personally have
http://www.allheartchefs.com/wh18003.html
The sleeves aren't as short as 3/4 but they still aren't all the way to your wrists. They don't get in the way at all. This jacket gets softer and softer as you wash it and its very light in the summer. And its like 20 bucks WITH embrodery! You can't beat that..
Good luck!
Ooooh!! Thanks Kat! I'll have to order a catalog.
www.chefwear.com doesn't show it on their website, but I have their catalog as well and they do have a really nice chocolate brown women's chef's jacket in there. I love pink and chocolate brown so I contemplated ordering it myself!
