I'm so sorry I missed this post from the beginning. Oh well, I just finished my decorating for my cousin's son's baptism tomorrow (or should I say later). At least I have a good excuse.

This one practically made me wake up my DH from laughing so loudly! Thanks, Guys!

It looks like I'll be making one, although I'm not sure I trust myself with a chain saw. Really, though, how much harder could it be than a kitchenaid? icon_wink.gif

I may just contact a local woodworking shop or someone who advertises wood for fireplaces. I'd bet they'd know someone who'd cut one for me.

Gotta tell you about my experience with the chainsaw. If someone had been filming I would've ended up on AFV. We had this little maple tree out front. It quit growing one spring and my husband and I decided it might have been struck by lightning. I decided I wanted to cut it down. I figured I had the chainsaw, I'd do it myself. "How hard can it be." I've watched the guys do it, right. But, see, I cut it down level with the ground. At the base of the tree. How wise we become in hindsight. What was I thinking! Ok. you guys. stop laughing. It hurt when it landed on my head! Lucky for me it was a pretty small tree. (And no one was watching.)

Waywordz - Don't feel bad...I did that too with my peach tree the first time I tried to use my mother's chainsaw. I wasn't so lucky though - my mother (Ms. Fix-It I-Can-Do-It-All) was watching...and laughing her butt off!

Thanks Misdawn, actually I laughed at myself (after it quit hurting) and then just felt really stupid. We must've had the same mother. My mom built us our own playhouse! Have to give her credit, though, she tried hard not to sometimes, when I would do something really goofy like this. Unfortunately, I think I inheirited her sense of inappropriate humor. It has gotten me in trouble more than once or twice.

yep wipe down and reuse.. but where would ya store one without it causing a problem (ie bugs..etc?)

ALSO... you have to give these things a while to air out... because if there is bugs of some kind in it .. it would take a while for all of them to leave icon_sad.gif

all ya need is a anty wedding cake BLAH

Stick it in a garbage bag and spray the crap out of it with Raid, or something like that. Works really well. Then you have to air it out.

I read this waiting for the punch line. I really thought she was joking and then I couldn't stop laughing. Sorry but I am a city girl and the thought of using a chainsaw really freaks me out. And what about bugs? lip splinters? Its pretty but . . .

I know where I live, there is a place where you can take your yard waste - check to see if you have something like that locally, they might have chunks of trees they are getting ready to grind up for mulch.

I did one and had my lovely boyfriend cut a piece for me. When I told him I needed a stump for my cake he was like WHAT?? icon_eek.gif

It was pretty funny!! Not the best pic, but here's mine. We just aired it out for a few days and it worked out great. Added to the rustic look.

Loving these posts!!  I also needed tree stump centerpieces which could just have easily been cake stump stand(s) but they were very heavy thus very very expensive to have shipped and I could think of no local sources SO I made my own. Tutorial:  Start with the Winbeckler's tree bark silicone mold, $22 at cakesuppliesplus.com.  Then get thee to thy favorite cake supply store and purchase a cake dummy(ies). I bought 14 dummies online, size 10"x3",  for less than just the shipping for one real stump.  Now you also have the stability you need without the weight.  Since I used my "stumps" as centerpieces, I wasn't worried about edibles so I used wall texture then the mold (treat as if it were crusting BC) then spray paints (black, browns, beige; a camouflage green thing ).  But if you want your stand to be touching edible surfaces, use ganache, BC, or fondant (who cares which kind) on your dummy(ies). For the cake, below I used chocolate ganache and thinned dusts in the same colors as the spray paints. The Winbecklers color the bark with an airbrush but I don't have one so there ya go. You can always mount your "stump" on yet another base if that makes it easier to transport (maybe a base covered with moss and/or mushrooms "growing" in dirt - go crazy!), and you can always separate your edibles from non-edibles with a base too.  CC's policy is to include no pictures other then edibles, so out of respect I will include only the cake (no dummies were harmed in this process) which was mounted on a burlap-covered board.  But just know that the centerpieces looked just the same (only weighed much less!!) and no cakes were harmed in that process either. If you want to see pix of the dummy stumps, just PM me and I'll be glad to reply, but they look just like the cake.   Happy Baking --

Tree trunk; tree bark; sunflowers. Rustic. Country. Barn wedding. I wrote to CC to see what's wrong: I cannot enter a single word to thank you for your awesome comments or explain what I did!! First of all, I used chocolate ganache on the sides and white ganach on the tops. Go to the Winbeckler site, CakeSuppliesPlus.com and order the "Tree Bark Texture Mat Silicone" for $22. I don't know how you could get this texture otherwise. Site says it works for buttercream (I tried and agree but wanted ganache) and fondant (would agree but didn't try). Procedure: Dust the mold heavily with "poof" (1/2 cornstarch; 1/2 confex sugar) because you DO want the white to stay on the ganache for the effect. Then thin black, brown (s), mossy green(s), and white/beige with extract, vodka, or, my favorite, peppermint schnapps (!). Notice that each layer is an experiment, but what generally worked best was black with a small, thin brush in the deepest recesses, vey thin white with a wide, course brush lightly over the highest points (up and down was better than sideways), and brown(s) and green(s) randomly applied. Cake topper by BlacksmithCreations on Etsy. Board covered with burlap. "Carving" by dipping a very small ball tool in hot water then wiping dry; melted the ganache perfectly. Sunflower inspiration by Edna - I love her - De La Cruz. I am very glad to give further insight and/or answer questions as soon as CC allows me to do so!!

I sent my husband down back with a chainsaw and ended up with four.  In the process I discovered that there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.  Freshly cut wood needs to season  - SLOWLY - and I'm talking years - in the garage - not the house - or it will split - and split badly.  We even tried drilling a large hole in the center to ease the stress but it still split.  So I just put the split in the back of the cake table.  There is a place on line where you can buy them but I think they're pretty thin.  Try Save-On-Crafts.com or Etsy?  Three Tiered Apple Basket Cake. Made for a wedding show at an orchard.
