How many cookies do you have to make? If only a couple, I've been known to take one of those soft covered 3 ring binders, trace a pic of whatever you want on it, cut it out and use that as your template. A graduation cap, diploma, the numbers 2008. But if you need to make many, you won't want to do this. Cuz you have to place your template on your dough and then using a sharp knife, cut around it. Its kind of a pain for many cookies. Good luck

I'll make my own templates also, I print out a picture and cut it out and then laminate it. Roll out the dough place the laminated picture down and with a sharp knife cut around it and voila! Works great..except if you have a big order it is a pain and ALOT of work vs a cookie cutter. Here is a "how to" tutorial on making your own cutter out of aluminum http://cakecentral.com/article73-How-To-Make-Your-Own-Cookie-Cutters.html
