Help! Need Ideas For "wizard Of Oz" Theme
Decorating By apclassicwed Updated 11 Jul 2008 , 10:29pm by apclassicwed
I have an order for a birthday cake for a 2 year old and 4 year old sisters with a Wizard of Oz/Over the Rainbow theme. For simplicity, mom wants a 12x 18 sheet cake but has left the design element up to me within the theme. I was thinking about the yellow brick road, a rainbow then I get stumped. All ideas welcome
TIA!

When I think of that movie, I think ruby red shoes, blue gingham dress, Emerald city, and rainbows.
Could you do a rainbow for the sides? alternate the colors.
Then on the top, do a scene with the Emerald city, the yellow brick road with a couple of ruby shoes on top, and that huge green field (the one they fell asleep in?)
Witches feet under the cake...but I suppose that may be a bit gruesome for 2 and 4 year olds.
Emerald City skyline around the edge of the cake
A field of poppies
A glittery red slipper at the end of the yellow brick road, or under a rainbow, even just a pretty pair of them on the top of the cake!
That's all I can think of right now. Good luck!!
I did a chocolate sculpture of the yellow brick road and Emerald City...
There are daisies instead of poppies because I based it on a photograph I found on Google.
Emerald city was super easy to do in chocolate (this was my very first chocolate sculpture) and it would be easy to put something like that on top of a cake and then just do the brick road, etc. in buttercream or fondant directly on the cake.
"Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly..." So you could do sweet little bluebirds and a rainbow.
I also like the idea of doing the hot air balloon that the Wizard tries to use to get Dorothy back home.
Glenda the Good Witch has a stereotypical "magic wand" with a star on a stick.
The witch's crystal ball or hourglass could be included.
What about the talking trees and the flying monkeys....
Okay, getting way out of hand, now!
Thank you everyone for your wonderful ideas!
CandyLady, that web site is nice, made me more comfortable doing this cake.
So far, I want to do the yellow brick road, the emerald city silouette, rainbow and add some red poppies. Now, the hardest thing---the red slippers!
BrandisBaked, how did you do the red slippers?
oh, I was just dreaming of a wizard of OZ cake last night. These pictures are so cute and was in line with what I was thinking too. I did a pumpkin a couple of years back with the wizard of oz theme on a yellow brick road with the wicked witch and the ruby slippers. Then all of my family dressed the part. It was cool. I wished I was doing cakes then.
Just talked to my co worker that I did the cake for--it was a hit!! She even told her sisters that she made the cake and had em goin until the cake was cut & revealed rainbow layers (thanks to my CC'ers--dont remember exactly who). Thanks everyone for your ideas, I had fun making this cake
