Ok! Here's the deal. I am planning to make a wine bottle in a crate cake for my dh for father's day. I want to keep it small because neither of us really needs the calories icon_lol.gif
My cake will probably be about 4 inches wide and about 9 inches long. I already made a wine bottle from gum paste. I then planned to make some fondant grapes to put on the cake...then came the leaves. Then I thought to myself...hmmm, cheese goes well with cake so I made some cheese. Then I made one more types for variety. Then I made some crackers for the cheese and then came some apple slices then olives!!! Now I am making a cutting board and a cheese knife. I know some of you are thinking "Is she nuts?" (Maybe I should make some nuts too? icon_redface.gif )
Now I am wondering if in a design it is a bad thing to go overboard? Is it better to keep things simple? What do you think?
Thanks thumbs_up.gif

lollol

Hey, when an idea grabs you, it grabs you, there's just no way around it! I'm guilty of it, as I'm sure just about everybody else here is as well (at least at some point). When inspiration hits, there's just no denying it. I think you idea sounds cute, in fact it's similar to one that I'm planning for my FIL retirement party, hope to keep it under control, but already got the grapes, and a picinic blanket, and wine bottle (going to experiment with sugar) and etc. etc. etc.

But as far as the keeping it simple, I guess it just depends on what your doing/who your doing it for, as long as your enjoying yourself, who cares?! (I have a hard time keeping it simple)

I am going through the exact same thing w/ my daughter's b-day cake. It started as something fairly simple & yet I keep adding & adding or decide that maybe there are too many pink butterflies, perhaps I should make some white ones or maybe too many pink flowers, maybe I should make some different colors.....it goes on & on! So, I feel your 'pain'....but I do agree that when the creative spark bites you it won't let go until you submit! haha. Your cake does sound very cool, can't wait to see pictures icon_smile.gif

Haha! I didn't catch that when I read it. I think (I hope) she meant cheese goes well with wine. That's what my mind turned it into anyway. And that would be true....cheese does go well with wine. icon_smile.gif

...what about wine glasses....sorry, just had to throw that in.

I agree with all the others--when creativity strikes--go with it, especially for family. The experience and practice alone is worth it, never know when you will hit on a creation that someone might want to order and PAY FOR !!!
I always go overboard and DH is always walking by while I'm working and saying "stop, you've done enough for what they're paying for"....or "they didnt' request that so why are you adding all that stuff they didn't pay for?"...... guilty as charged! icon_lol.gif

I think overboard in a design would be ...a single tier...with stripes, dots, flowers, bows, lace points, drop strings...to me, that is.

To complete a design...it's when you step back and look at it and the thought, "something is missing" doesn't pop into your head...again...to me, that is.

I can't wait to see the finished design!

I am done. My husband loved his father's day cake. This was probably my most enjoyable cake by far. For those of you who wanted to see it finished...here it is. Hope you like it. TFL
