Hello...I just found out I am doing a 4 tiered wedding cake this weekend...
5,8,11 and 14 inches round...4 inches tall each layer...

I can't seem to find a cake drum...which is what I usually use...
Is a masonite board the same?? Will it hold???


What can you suggest please??

i usually put 2 of the cake boards together. I use the kind that are foil lined and come 2 to the pack. I have also found cutting boards work well for rectangular or square cakes. I cover them with white freezer paper.

or use the top of one those round pressboard 3-legged tables you can get at Wal-Mart, etc.

I use Masonite boards all the time & I've never had a problem w/it.

The only reason you would need something heavy enough to support the whole cake is if you are carrying the whole cake assembled.

Otherwise you can tape and cover 3 regular cake boards together and use them to transport the bottom tier, then stack and border the others on-site.

Masonite is pretty sturdy. Someone described it as the stuff clipboards are made out of (and those thin things are strong). I've seen them between 1/4 & 1/2" thick in my local cake store & it's not as heavy as plywood.

I delivered a full sheet cake this past Saturday, on a 1/4 inch Masonite board. I should have gone with the 1/2 inch, because I wound up with hairline cracks on top of the cake (buttercream icing). The board was not sturdy enough for all that weight. I usually use the 1/2 inch MDF board but it wasn't returned to me after the last event!
