The heat at this wedding was hot so the flowers couldn't be put onto the cake until after the ceremony (which was under a 100 year old oak tree up on the hillside in flowing grass... .sooooo pretty!)

So the photographer didn't take the pic until the reception had started... and already the flowers on the edge had wilted....

But someone had STUCK THEIR FINGER INTO THE FRONT OF THE CAKE!

WHO DOES THAT?!

If you don't know what fondant is, at least poke it in the back, RIGHT SMACK IN THE FRONT! I am sickend each time I look at it.

http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1225034

Oh well, the cake came out perfect! Everyone was sooo impressed.

The 3 hour drive up the windy (what is the difference between windy as in blowing wind and windy as in the road was super not straight?) road. I had to drive most of it at 15mph since the road was so curvey, but the view was spectacular! So I didn't mind at all. The brides family owned this 3000 acre (not a typo, 3000!) cattle ranch back to the civil war. The reception was in a 100 year old barn. It was AMAZING! The best part was that the bride and groom are committed Christians and the whole thing was an amazing tribute to who God Is. My husband is more friends with the groom than I am with the Bride (I did the cake for free), but I was crying for most of the ceremony even though I don't hardly know them. I can't emphasize how cool and special this wedding was.

If you want to see some awesome photography and a different view of the cake check out the photographers blog. INCREDIBLE!!!!

You'd be surprised who puts their finger in a cake. EVERYONE!

Most people would say 'kids', but that is absolutely NOT true. There are just as many adults who can't resist grabbing at the cake!

Probably some little kid did that. My brother used to do that all the time when he was little (we are the caboose of the grandkids and most of my cousin's all married when we were 3-icon_cool.gif. Anyway, until he was about 5 he would do that but always in the back thankfully.
However, when he got married everyone who got his finger in their cake all went up to his cake and put theirs in as well and this was before the photographer got pics of the cake too. Karma.

The bride told me it was probably a kid, and I told her probably NOT! Usually it is some adult who does it! But seriously, did you see how big that hole is right in front of the cake?!!!

LOL Unfortunately, there's a lot of truth in that statement.

My DH's cousin has five children and when they attend parties here, they usually do it which infuriates me, but I leaned years ago after correcting their eldest child to not even bother saying anything anymore. After correcting her twice for 'tasting the icing off the cake), the next time I caught her I also caught her mother doing it with her! How do you correct the kid when the parent does it too? I sort of made a joke about it, but they still do that, even at their own functions.

I'm just sorry I couldn't get closer to the cake for one of the son's communion when she served her Sylvia Weinstock cake. I would have ripped a little tiny piece of fondant off "just to taste"! (Consider it all my pent up anger over the years! icon_lol.gif )

little kids under the age of 4 .... adults over the age of 18!

Everyone between 4 and 18 is scared of getting in trouble for touching the cake. Under age 4, they haven't learned this fear yet. Dumb a$$ adults just don't give a sh--- , uh I mean, give a darn! icon_rolleyes.gif

Once I was working @ a telemarketing place and someone brought a really nice chocolate cake. By the afternoon someone had torn out a chunk of that cake with their hand. You could even see the outline of the fingers. icon_mad.gif So yeah...it's not always a kid.

I think I can up this sort of situation. A friend of mine was getting married and wanted 500 cupcakes and a 6 inch cake to cut. Everything was going well except the day was 115 degrees and it was an outside wedding. I had the 6 inch in the kitchen trying to keep it cool when the groom's mother comes in and puts her whole hand on top of the cake to PICK IT UP!!! I caught her in the act and asked her what the he** was she doing? She said she didn't think it was a real cake and just wanted to touch it.

I wanted to TOUCH HER!!!! Needless to say, the cake was completely destroyed and couldn't be fixed.

At my brother's bday party last year, all of the kids were touching the fondant and picking the toys up off the cake. I saw FINGERNAIL MARKS in the fondant, and almost threw up.

Needless to say, I wasn't a happy camper and either were they after I got through talking to them...heh.

What pissed me off the most, was that the parents were all just standing around letting them do that! If I caught my kid doing that, I would totally freak out. It's just baffling to me that so many people, children and adults alike, don't see a problem with doing things like that.

It's rude, disrespectful and unsanitary!

I'm sorry someone did that to your cake, but regardless, it still looked wonderful icon_smile.gif

Here's one to make you feel better...

It was only a family cake, so no one else was affected.

For my daughter's first birthday, I had put her cake on the table, still on my flat turntable. I was in the kitchen cooking the meal for the party. I looked over, and she had climbed up on the chair and was turning the turntable. I thought that was cute...but it turns out her tongue was out, licking the cake while she turned the turntable. By the time I noticed, she had worn a groove in the buttercream.

That's a scream!!! LOL

I had a similar birthday cake mishap...my daughter was turning 2 or 3, and I had set the cake out on the dinner table, while preparing dinner as well. I caught her dipping her fingers in the frosting, and told her I didn't want her little hands on that cake again.

My husband comes and gets me out of the kitchen a few minutes later...to find that she was leaning forward - with hands carefully folded behind her back - taking nice little nibbles on the side of the cake. OMIGOSH, I about snorted trying not to laugh out loud!!!

I guess I should have been more specific, huh?? icon_biggrin.gif

Homemade-Goodies, I remember last year another member had the same exact 'problem'. That's something you really don't forget - even if you didn't see it personally, it sort of leaves a distinct mental image. lol

These people who don't mind their children going over and touching cakes deserve to have people go over to their tables at restuarants, or their plates at friends' houses, and have said people pick up and look at their dinner and then place it back on the plate and walk away. Some of them even deserve to have said people taste their dinner, return it to the plate and walk away. What's the difference?

To this day it's still one of my pet peeves and whenever the cake is served at my home and my DH's cousins are there, I basically don't let the cake out of my site.

I recently had a bday party for my daughter. The kids were fine except for one. She kept saying she wanted a cupcake and I kept telling her it wasn't time. I was serving the kids their food and she said she wanted a cupcake and I told her she would have one later. icon_twisted.gif Finally later I was getting the kids drinks and I see her standing in her chair and reaching over to get a cupcake. icon_confused.gificon_eek.gif Luckily I get there in time & have to remove them completely from the table. I know.....I should have got her mother. Well, her mom was sitting there the whole time like 2 feet away watching. icon_mad.gif

That is so annoying! I haven't had a lot of adults do that, but I have a lot of kids come up and try to stick their fingers in the cake and their parents watch them do it and don't say a thing. I usually end up having to redirect them myself.

Maybe it was the dog that licked the icing off the cake in that gross, gross thread a while back. icon_lol.gif

My dh's friends would do it, without hesitation. We were at a private club in Philly with one of dh's high falutin' financial wizard friends, and a few others. (It was in the movie "Trading Places" with Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy. ) Anyway, there was a wedding reception in the ballroom, and the cake and guest book were out in the lobby for some reason. I'm sure the club had never had a problem with cakes being vandalized before, but a guy went up and stuck his fingers all in the icing, then they all proceeded to write obscene things in their guest book.

We read about this all the time, so it comes as no surprise.

Of course, there is going to be some idiot at almost every wedding who will stick their finger into the cake.

Some do it to taste the icing, but I think most do it out of spite - to see if they can get away with it.

Adults are more guilty of doing this than children are.

My DIL freakin' ALWAYS scoops icing on my cakes, ALWAYS on top and ALWAYS in the front. I had no idea it was such a wide-spread problem. Somehow that doesn't help. It's still rude and I shall continue to tell her so. It's almost like she's jealous and this is her control thing. It really annoys me, though. I get worked up before going over there with a cake and I'm really afraid that my impulse to have the cake fly across her kitchen is going to take over.

Did you ever see the display wedding cakes at Wal-Mart? Loaded with fingerprints. I asked the bakery mgr at my local store about it, and she said that the cake was just put out two days ago, but that day, it looked like it was in a war zone.

She said everybody who goes up to it puts their finger into it because they think it's plaster or spackle piped on there.

Luckily no one has had the audacity to do that to any of my cakes. If they did, I don't care if it's a kid or not, I would go off. They would know that if they ever try to do it again, they would pull back a nub. I would be very ill at my kid if he were ever to do that.

It's just not right.

In my experience it usually an adult - occasionally a very small child.

The first cake I entered at out local fair was completely destroyed by prodding fingers and "pushing" on the loops of the fondant loopy bow.

So true, my 5 year old would'nt do it because he knows its a no-no but my 3 year would probably take a bite right out of it!

But on the other hand I was at the grocery store with my husband the other day and he kept touching the display cakes at the bakery "I want to see if they are real", even though he knew they were'nt and they were surrounded by DO NOT TOUCH signs!
But he also likes to play bumper -grocery carts with unsuspecting shoppers, I think he falls into the under 4 catagory!

Sorry someone poked your cake, you should find out who did it and poke them!
The cake is beautiful though, hole or no hole you did a great job!

some people.............I just wanted to say I went and looked at ALL the photos from that wedding. What a wonderful photographer they had!! Those pictures are gorgeous......I love that they're not all staged...you can really get a sense of the love between the couple and their families. So awesome! I also love that the photographer wasn't afraid to show them praying before the ceremony and all his sweet comments with the pictures about the bride and groom..........you really got a sense of who they are!! Awesome job!!

P.S. everyone knows that cake was flawless before the finger poke so don't stress!!! It does stink that you don't have a photo before that happened though.

I use to show sheep at the county fairs.... you would work hours getting their wool clean, carded, smoothed and clipped......and some adult would come along and ....."OH... isn't that soft" and poke their fingers all over your work.

Same thing......some people can't stand it, don't have a brain or consideration ......HAVE TO TOUCH.........

Sorry that happen.........

That would make me so mad, if one of my kids did that and I witnessed it I would march them over to the bride (or whoever's cake it is) and make them apologize, even if it was the 3 or 2 yr old. They will never learn right from wrong if you don't teach them!

Sorry but this made me laugh out loud, literally! I have to do a grooms cake next week for a family member and i just know some idiot in my husbands family is going to put there hands all over it, not to mention the moron who takes it upon themselves to "cut" the cake for everyone, at the last family wedding this guy hacked into the cake like he was choping wood, the bride(his sister) was steamed, to say the least.

Vanna-

Just make sure the groom's cake is cut by somebody who knows what they're doing. AT my sister's wedding the person in charge of cutting the groom's cake cut these massive pieces like it was a grid instead of one piece at a time and only like a dozen people even got any. The wedding cake actually got butchered as well. Some ignorant somebody didn't know to cut from the back the way you are supposed to and proceeded to take the cake layers apart, to really get at it.
