Never had this happen before but my frosting is very grainy. Can this be fixed? I hate to throw it out. I'm almost afraid to make more.
Help!!!
This happened to me about a month ago. I made 5 qts of Sugar Shacks bc and it ended up faintly grainy. I 'm pretty sure it was my sugar. I went ahead and used what I need right then, and figured the 1st graders wouldn't notice anyway. Every adult who got one, and they practically fight to get my stuff at that school, raved to my dd about how wonderful they were and they LOVE my icing. Evidently no one else noticed a grainy-ness. I put what was left in the mixer and whipped the life out of it for about 10 min and it made very little difference. I've had that happen one other time in all these years and I just think it was my sugar. I only use Wal Marts pow sugar.
I've had this happen to me many times in the past and figured out that it's because I need to add more liquid to it, probably a tablespoon at a time and would work to get all the lumps out. Good luck.
I believe I've read a thread on this before.... and the suggestion was to rewhip the frosting. Worth a try! Good Luck?!?!?!
Thanks, I'll start whipping. Anymore suggestions would be appreciated. I would hate to waste this frosting. If it could be used for anything else I would be willing to do that also.
I usually use Walmarts confectioners sugar too but I mixed in some Albertsons with it this time. I wonder if that was the problem? Never again!!!!
I had that happen too, it was the powdered sugar from sam's. The big bags.
I ended up using what I made in the centers as filling for my cup cakes and went back to the store and bought the Domino powdered sugar.
Now I have several bags of the powdered sugar in my cabinet afraid to use it again.
When you say grainy does it crunch on your teeth like when you get sand in your mouth?? Mine did this last week and i keeped added warm liquid and finally it wasnt as grainy, as it was a first,.
Thanks
There was a thread about this a few weeks ago, it is the powdered sugar that does it. Practically all PS from the grocery stores have some form of cornstarch in it to keep it from clumping. This makes the slightly grainy texture. I just bought a box from Gordon Foods of 6x powdered sugar that contains no cornstarch to see if it makes a difference.
i sift my powdered sugar before using, even if it says you don't have too and even if it says its 10x.
I'm pretty sure it was the powdered sugar. I always sift my pd sugar too. It did not make a difference this time. I have never found pd sugar without cornstarch. I will keep looking. I did mix some cherry preserves with the grainy stuff and it made a very good filling. I don't know what the preserves did but it was not as grainy and quite tasty. I am going to try some strawberry preserves in the rest of the frosting and see what that does. I'm a little afraid to make more frosting. I hate it when things don't turn out like they are suppose to.
Thanks for everyone's help. You guys are the greatest!!!!
You know what I just checked the box of the 6x and it says it does have corn starch in it. AAAAHHH! (I'm returning it possibly)
I sifted my 10x powdered sugar everytime and I still get that slight grit to it. Drives me crazy. I think it's time I really start trying IMBC and SMBC.
