I want to make a cake with space in the middle. Do I run a dowel rod through the bottom cake and attach the pillars to those? I am not sure how to keep the pillars from sinking in the cake.

Hey, I use plastic drinking straws to support my cake tiers. They are much easier to cut than dowls & support just as well.
