I'd be interested in a MA CC, it would be nice to swap ideas and chat about the business.
Funny...Every time DH asks what are you thinking about my response is something cake related, I'm just waiting for him to say ENOUGH with the cake already! But he has been really supportive. I told him that I would need my own space for my baking stuff and he laughed...he thinks I am squeezing everyone out of thehouse with my cake equipment.

That is so funny, I know I always have cake on my mind. My supplies keep increasing and there's not enough room.

I live in Tewksbury.

I will let Wendy know you guys are interested. We have been chatting on Womens place for now until we can get meetings organized.
It's great to have some other women around here to talk about cakes with. I'm sure my friends get bored of me talking about it. icon_lol.gif

Don't forget to check out Massices too. You can win prizes and you get to see a demonstrator every meeting. The problem is the meetings are only 4 times a year. (I think)
The North Shore group could and should meet more often.
Wendy just has to invite you to join the forum on Womens place. So I've pm'd her your cc screen names.

women's place is a website for women to chat about anything. www.womens-place.com Wendy started a private forum for us cake decorators from the North Shore and you have to be invited by her in order to join the private forum. You don't need her to become a member however. Which you will need to be in order to be invited to our private group. Hopefully I'm making sence! icon_confused.gif
So far we haven't chatted much on it but it should change once we have some more members.
I let Wendy know the link to this chat as well. So hopefully within the next few days she will check her pm and get back to you.
I'm so excited that there are so many of you guys wanting to join! Yeah!

If you would like to be a member of the North shore cake group we are forming here is what you need to do:
First go to Womens-place.com, then register, after that pm [/u]wendy d . That is her women's place name. Then you should be able to chat on the private sight all you want. If that doesn't work for some reason e-mail me. [email protected]
I hope this wasn't too confusing! icon_confused.gif

I know! I can't wait. We should get together and visit Truly Jorges. I've never been in there. (even though he is 2 seconds away) I know he sells pastries and stuff too. icon_smile.gif So we could go check it out and if we happen to be hungry... icon_smile.gif
Just a thought. icon_smile.gif

Truly Jorges is a nice bakery but has no seating to hang out like a cafe.

The pastries are yummy, but (in my humble opinion) the cakes are dry --they use a sponge base with simple syrup.

I went to an ICES meeting that was held there (in the back where the steel work tables are) and Jorge and Sean did a chocolate mold demonstration. We had lunch brought in and it was cramped and a bit uncomfortable. One of the long-time ICES members, Cathy Mulligan, is the sister of Sean (co-owner of Jorge's).

Both Jorge and Sean are super nice people...as is Cathy.

Thanks for the info.
I've seen his web sight but not been in the store. I didn't think his cakes were all that unbelievable on the sight either. I was expecting them to wow me more.
Well then we should skip it I think. Oh well. icon_smile.gif We should definitely meet somewhere at some point though. icon_smile.gif When you get a screen name on womens place pm me and then I'll know you have joined and we can chat on there. My screen name is mellormom.

Hi,

Looks like I'm a bit late on this posting...but we just moved to MA...we currently live in Natick and are moving to Medfield next month.

If possible, I'd love to participate in any cake meetings! My husband is very supportive, but he gets tired of hearing about cakes too!!

Can I be added to the list of people if you happen to gather?

Also, someone was previously asking about classes, there is a store called Lorrianes Cake Decorating and Supply (www.lorrainescakesupply.com) I've been to the store, but haven't been to the classes yet.

Hey Welcome to MA! icon_smile.gif We currently don't meet but we have a group forming on the web. www.womensplace.com If you register there and e-mail me your name that you chose then I can get you on the forum. Wendy is the one who started that forum so I will let her know you are interested.
Loraine's is a good shop. We went there at our last ices meeting.
You can also join Mass Ices. We meet 4 times a year each in a different part of the state. The cost is $60 a year and then an average of $15 everytime you go for meals.
Hope this was helpful! icon_smile.gif

HI all!
Well, I just found this link.. I"m a little behind (kids finally are in school full time and now I get to figure out what I want to be when I grow up..)

seems like a lot of people are interested in the club.. it's just a message board right now, so if anyone would like to meet, email me and I'll work on getting a place set up.. A friend of mine from elementary school owns a bakery in Salem, so I might be able to get him to talk to us..

email me at [email protected] ..

Do any of you ladies with residential kitchens have a septic system? I'm in Middlesex County and was told when I called the HD not to bother applying for a residential kitchen because my home has a septic system. Any suggestions?

Devillediva- I live in Easton and we only have septic. When I spoke to our BOH director I got the same information as everyone else. Just need to apply for the license, get servsafe certified and pass an inspection. He said the only thing needed for the inspection is to make sure that home use items were seperate from business items and to make sure you have a hand soap dispenser at the sink. He was very laid back and very nice. Thank god! Just need to get off my rear now and do it. icon_rolleyes.gif

One more thing- were did you MA girls that are licensed get your servsafe certificate from? Looking around for a place that doesn't charge an arm and a leg. Thanks!

my health insp said something about a proctor class?? anyone know anything about that??

Try your local community college or trade schools for the serv safe classes.. I've seen them listed at North Shore Community College and at North Shore Tech in Middleton.. they must be offered at other places too though..

Well,
I applied for a residential kitchen license anyways after on the phone last month I was told no. Well, got the rejection letter today...based on my "home septic will not support the business requirements". Don't know what those requirements are though. Bummer....guess I have to quit. (&*^%$^%&^

Wow...can't believe I'm just seeing this!!! I can't believe how many we have in MA!!! I'm in Millbury right outside of Worcester!!! Thinking about getting my license and starting to sell. It seems so easy in MA so why not? At least then I could make some money on the side for all the cakes I make icon_smile.gif

Wow! I am sorry to hear this!

It must be a town by town decision. I live in Middlesex County (Wilmington) and have septic also. I got licensed with no problems.

I know this threat is a bit old, but could anybody tell me if they ended up being able to get licensed for their residential kitchen by their local BOH? I just bought a house in Freetown and then called the local Board of Health to find out how to get licensed, only to find out that they do not license residential kitchens WHATSOEVER in Freetown if zoned in a Residential area. I had no idea! This was my goal for owning my own home! Now I'm stuck! icon_cry.gif

The lady at the Mass DPH told me that a wholesale residential kitchen would have to get licensed through the local BOH the same way, so there would really be no way around it, and the lady at the local BOH told me the only way I could possibly do it would be if I was to get re-zoned, and that would basically be impossible. icon_sad.gif

Has anybody figured out an alternate solution?

I also live in mass. I'm in Worcester. I've been making cakes for family and friends for many years, and the better I get I am really considering a business.
I was told by a friend that I could not have a home cake business, because I have a dog. I also do not have doors that close to my kitchen. I'm open to a living area. I wonder if this is just what people have "heard" or if it's fact. I understand the reasoning if I can't; yet he's not a big shedder, and we keep a clean house. So I really want to know if this is feasible. I simply can't afford to rent space at this time.

Thank you Crazy4sugar! That link answered a lot of my questions.

Can anyone be specific about how you keep your house stuff separate from what you use for your business? (separate drawers, cabinets, containers) ?? Does it all have to be labeled for the business? How does the inspector know what's for the house & what's for the business? Thanks.
