Well, I'm exhausted, mentally, more than anything. I have done so many free cakes for friends, i'm feeling a little used.

This last example is what takes the cake. A distant friend asked me to make her parents 55th anniversary cake. I agreed, of course she has no money to pay, so I do it for free. I worked hard on this cake, had several problems, knew it wasn't going to be easy. Sometimes you just know, didn't want to do it, had a bunch of things going on.
First off, I made a double batch of buttercream, and for some reason the frosting turned very grainy, never had this happen before, don't know what went wrong, dumped it in the garbage. Finally, I get the cake done, and I have to meet this friend 30 miles away, she lives 60 miles away, I tell her I'll split the distant with her. The road is so curvy, and the cake arrives just fine. I drop off the cake, and off I go. I get home, put my feet up so glad its over with. When all of a sudden I hear someone calling my name outside. There she stands with cake, in a total mess, destroyed, wanting to know if I can fix it. It had rolled all over the back of her car, she has a dog, and it has hair all over it, and she wants me to FIX IT. She explains that she forgot it was in her car, and peeled out the parking lot, and took the corner way too fast. She arrived at my house 5 minutes after I got home, she said it happened as soon as I left her. I couldn't believe it. I explained how careful I was, pulling over to let traffic by, taking corners easy, and then she pulls this, I'll tell you, I was screaming inside. Well, I tell her it can't be fixed, its beyond saving, and she starts telling me, we have to fix it, they are counting on her to bring the cake.
I decided to rebake and decorate the cake all over again, I was so upset, especially when she was so careless, and I knew she had to drive from my house, and the road is really curvy, didn't think she would be able to do it.
I guess she made it, she emailed me, and said it arrived fine. Oh, if you want to see it, its the first cake in my pictures, the 2 tiered one with the bow and pearls. Thanks for letting me vent, i'm just so glad its over!!!

It makes you sort of understand the people that end up going on a murderous rampage and all the neighbors say, "She was a nice lady, quiet but friendly... we didn't see it coming." You were waaaaay nicer than I'd have been... I'd have given her directions to the local Wal*Mart.

And, oh my yes, that was a beautiful cake! icon_cry.gif

Cathyscakes, you need to be nominated for saint-hood!!!!
I can NOT believe you re-baked a whole nother cake for FREE!!! I also can NOT believe the friend actually had the nerve to drive all the way to your house to ask you to 'fix' a so obviously ruined cake, when it was her crazy driving antics that ruined it!!!! icon_mad.gif

I would've told her that she better pick up a Sam's Club sheet cake on the way to the party!!! icon_surprised.gif

I have to agree with the other posts. You're a much better sport than I would have been. And the cake is gorgeous. That would've taken me hours to re-do. What did your "friend" do? Sit and drink all your coffee and watch you re-do it?

seriously girl, you are a freakin saint. i wouldn't have done the FIRST cake for free, let alone a second! i can't even imagine being that careless with such a gorgeous cake that somebody made you for FREE...and then actually expecting them to fix it! again...for free. wow. the stuff about the dog hair made me cringe. gross. what exactly did she think you'd do to "fix" that, pick them all off with tweezers? icon_confused.gif

I just looked at your cakes, and it is way past time for you to stop making cakes free...especially for people who take advantage of you and then destroy your beautiful work!

I'm sorry you had this experience.

Let me start out and say that this friend is a little odd. She is very self-centered, the world revolves around her, so I can see how she forgot the cake was in the car, thats just the way she is. When she asked me to do it, I knew there would be trouble, she would either change designs or cancel, something, you just don't know with her. I wasn't going to say this, but the topper was... she sat at my house and ate the cake that had just rolled all over her car, she had 3 pieces, it was making me sick. I think she needs help, thats why I feel a little sorry for her. Thanks for all of your support, it sure helps to talk to you all.

OMG!!!! There certainly is something wrong with this woman if she's EATING a cake covered in DOG HAIR and whatever else after it rolled around in her car!!!!!! icon_surprised.gif That's just GROSS!!!! Please just tell us that she ate the untainted center portion or something before we're all reaching for our big puke buckets!!!!

Yes, it has to be saint-hood for you!! How did you contain yourself while she was eating a dog hair covered cake while watching you make another one?!?!?!!! tapedshut.gif
Please, for all of us, do not agree to do another free cake for this lady ever again!!

Nope Bunniefluf, she ate it and enjoyed every moment of it, she picked off a couple of hairs, and kept on eating, I have never seen anything like it. After she got to my house with the cake, she started complaining that she was hungry, I guess she expected me to make her dinner also, when I didn't offer, she started on the cake, she didn't even flench, SHE HAD 3 PIECES OF THE THING

Melvira, you're so funny, just wanted to say that I love your frosting method, I use it all of the time, I use to only want to do cakes with basketweave, I never could get my cakes smooth enough, now I don't have to worry, thanks

That is so disgusting!

And,

First of all I can't believe you made a cake for free and on top of that drove 1/2 way to deliver the cake (which I'm sure was very beautiful) AND then she had you make another one! Did she at the very least say sorry!!!

WOW, you are a an angel and your cake was beautiful!

Let me get this straight. She asks you to make her a tiered cake for nothing, let's you drive 30 miles to meet her with it, THEN she gets right into her car WITH HER DOG and peels out already forgetting she has a big cake in the dang car??? Then she's right on your heels 30 stinkin miles to your house with the dog hair covered wrecked cake and asks you to "fix it"??? Not only that but she's hungry so she chows down on the doggy hair cake while you remake her another free tiered cake??? Geez.............. I think it's time you set this distant friend free, cause she's no friend. You are a "bigger man than I", because I wouldn't have made that cake twice.

People are amazing, aren't they?

Your cake was beautiful! Stop with the freebies already and start charging.

Hmmm tasty! let me just pick that dog hair outta my mouth!

It's just one of times when you sit here shaking your head in disabelief.

Girl I will now only do freebies for either charity or to give as a present, I cant afford to spend close to $40 per cake for free! A friend of mine is wanting a cake from me for free, so she is coming to my house to pick it up and I'm only making a basic 6" box mix with outta the tub frosting! LOL!! You want free, you get cheap!! icon_lol.gif

At least you can laugh at her ignorance and the gross fact that she sat in your house picking dog hairs outta that cake! That will have me laughing for years and I would be telling everyone aswell!! icon_lol.gif

Like I said , I was just screaming inside, I was so mad, didn't show it, did the new cake, like you all said like a saint, and I'm menopausal, don't know how I kept it together, it was like a bad movie. Carolann you got it all right, except her dog wasn't in the car, just the hair remains. Still haven't heard if it made it to the party, I know it made it to her house, she had to store it overnight, and take it the next day, I've been afraid she ate the cake, she made a comment that she hoped she could stay out of the cake, she's a night eater. I know it gets stranger and stranger, and since I threw the hairy cake in the garbage (after she had the 3 pieces, of course) I just have a bad feeling about it, since I haven't heard anything. Either she dumped the cake again, she ate the cake, her dog jumped in the middle of it and ate it, because I know she will take the dog to her parents. Too many choices, I could go on and on. Its made a great story, something I couldn't even make up, its all sad but true.

icon_eek.gif Ew, ew, eww, eeewww!! This had me leaping on my tippy toes, knees bent, hands shaking and nose scrunched.... yeeeeuuuuuk!

Well, I suppose she is an adult and what she puts in her mouth is her choice. If she loves your cakes that much you should see if she wants to purchase your cake scraps. icon_wink.gif

No thankfully she doesn't live close by, or she would be coming by for the cake scraps.
I did hear from her and she said that the cake arrived in good shape, hopefully I can believe her. Her daughter is friends of my daughter, so I can find out from her.
I guess she was mad at her mom, she said her mom didn't thank her for all of the running around she had to do to get the cake, its always all about her. In her mind, she was the one put out, I couldn't believe it. Glad its over.
