I have a friend who wants me to make a cake for her mom's birthday, and she wants to pay me for it, so she asked how much they cost (and told me NOT to lower my prices for her). But, I know she is going to school and doesn't have much money right now, so when she saw my price per serving, and how many servings would come out of each pan, she asked if we could do a 5" tier on top of a 6" tier. (I don't usually do too many different sizes, so I only have 5,6,9 and 12 inch pans.) But this would only give a 1/2 inch difference all the way around.

Has anyone else done this? Would it look totally bizarre? My inclination is to just tell her I'll do a 9" for the same price, even though it's more servings. It would probably be less work, too!

Thanks for your help!

First of all don't ever lower your prices. Customers will expect it every time and if she innocently tells someone else the price you charged her then that potential costomer will expect the same price.

As for the size I don't recommend placing a 5" on top of a 6". There is not enough difference in the size of each pan to make it look right. It'll just look like a tower. Make sense? 9" would be just fine and yes, easier to decorate.
