This is like a run on the bank. Rumors are flying back and forth here. Heath maybe you and Jackie need to post and let your membership know the latest. Is Cake Central closing it's website?

People are looking for other websites and sending messages so they don't lose touch with one another if you do close down. I am sure we would all like to know what the facts are. Should we continue to send donations to CC, or is it futile?

Oh give me a break. This website is not "closing." If rumors are indeed rampant, it's because of conjecture like this.

And if CC did close, another website would spring up and the community would rebuild itself.

Everybody calm down. icon_wink.gif

This is why they are called rumors! All talk, no fact.

Here are my thoughts....and that is exactly what it is ........thoughts!!!! Why would they just spend a ton of time and money to update the servers just to "close" the site (BIG HUGE THANK YOU FOR THAT)!!!! I would think that they would continue to update the servers as funds are received from sponsors, etc. It will be a process that takes time and money (like everything) but will eventually work itself out.

I am with Deanwithana....Why would they spend all this money only now to shut it down!!!I sure hope not though as I rely on this site Tremendously for advice, pictures, and plain old help!!! It would be a true loss to me!! I would pay a yearly fee!! I do to keep my website up and running...

Let me clarify something

I asked for emails of some of my buddies yesterday JUST so I'd have them on my email if CC went down again... NOT because I thought CC would close... BUT... you know what.... WILDER things have happened here lately with companies... they spend TONS of money and then SHUTDOWN... SO why do you say they couldn't do that? If Heath and Jackie wanted to they could shut it down in a heart beat... Thank GOD for them and their wonderful site..

But that is what I was doing... Getting emails so I could send quick hellos or messages to people.. NOT because I thought it was shutting down. icon_sad.gif

Rumors are rumors yest that is right... and you only listen to the people that count... that is why you discredit things!!!

They better not - I just chipped in some 'lettuce' towards it last night. icon_smile.gif
(And I STILL couldn't access areas...withdrawal is NOT a good thing)
Maybe a nominal yearly fee wouldn't be such a bad idea. It is essentially an online 'cake club' and we pay dues everywhere else... And our membership could qualify us for discounts at their advertisers...thus encouraging membership w/priveleges!
I mean, what 80,000 members worldwide x $25 = $2 million (American, which currently is about negative three Euros...LOL).

I wish one of them would just take a second to send out a post just saying hang in there everything will be fine or something. It is almost like they have dropped off the face of the earth. Does Kelly from Cake Boss know anything? Kelly are you there????

$5 a year per member would be a lot of $ too. I'm not in favor of a usage fee but I'd give a nominal one if it came to that. But I'm sure there are many of us who couldn't. I'm doing all I can this morning while it's up and going strong. It's like a shot in the arm. Hope this means things are looking up for H&J and the site!!

Have a great day everyone!

I agree, it seems a little unethical for them to just let us all wonder what's going on-surely they know there is a problem. Seems like an acknowledgement would be to their benefit.

I've seen rumors flying of lawsuits and such. I hope it's not true but I fear it is. This website is incredible. I'd pay a yearly fee to be on it as well. It would be well worth it.

kwdonlon <-- not bellyachin' about site speed or membership fees.

I donate every 6 months for what I've learned from the site, which is so much more than any class or one book I've bought. The $50 I've donated this year has more than covered my time saved in searching for a technique, idea, recipe, etc. and has saved me from buying supplies I don't need.

My feeling is donate what you can to cover for what you've already received from the site.

Furthermore....hey! this is a free website that J&H choose to run...they owe us nothing. Using words like "unethical" and "honest answers," is just wrong. There's other baking websites/boards out there to go to if we're not happy. The only people they need to report to is the advertisers on their website.

Jackie and Heath have not dropped off the face of the earth. They are working to fix the problems as quickly as they can. Please remember that they both have full-time jobs, and CakeCentral is something they provide out of their love for this community.

If you donate to CakeCentral, please donate as a THANK YOU for all the PRICELESS information here. Donating is no guarantee that things won't break! Anybody who works in IT can tell you that!

I have NOT been informed of ANY PLANS OF ANY KIND to shut down the site. Please just enjoy CC and realize that a few days of down-time is NOTHING in comparison to the FOUR YEARS that this site has been an invaluable resource to tens of thousands of people. FREE.

All I can say is if people were throwing around words like 'unethical' and saying that I OWE them honesty, I would be greatly insulted. J&H have worked their butts off for us without asking much in return. I know for some people it's hard to understand what's going on because they are not computer savvy. Let me put it this way...

Someone orders a cake from you, you tell them it will take a week. They start calling you fifty times a day to find out how the cake is coming. "Why isn't it done? Are you closing your bakery? I heard that you ruined a wedding cake two weeks ago, you're not going to do that to me are you? Some people say your cakes are dry, I don't want a dry cake. Maybe I shouldn't pay you for this cake!!" Now, would you continue to take calls from this person?

Now I know someone will jump in and say, "Well, I woudln't IGNORE them, I'd at least tell them what's going on." Ok, fine, but if you're up to your elbows in Buttercream and batter soothing a nervous customer may not be your first priority.

I just feel sad when I see people tearing down the site or the wonderful people that brought it to us. They are not unethical criminals, please be kind! We are all going to start looking pretty darn ungrateful if we hound them with insinuations and accusations!!

I think a simple hang in there we are working on it wold be nice. I certainly understand this being a part time thing for them since they make nothing from this site, but don't leave the community you created hanging.

I think CC has grown too big for it to remain a part time venture and run smoothly. Again.. my thoughts not necessarily fact. I'd be more than happy to donate if I thought it would help. But if money isn't the issue.. I am not going to donate to a site that may or may not be there when I need it. It's been much better in the past 2 days than it has been, but will it last?

I am not being snotty or anything. I think that a simple Hey.. we know the site has been moodier than a woman without chocolate while PMS'ing and we are working on fixing the problem.. would be nice to see.

I will say again that I would gladly pay a yearly fee to fund better programming and overall smooth running of this great site. The format here is great and the people are great too and I really appreciate all of the hard work that goes into running this place. It just plain stinks that this place can't run smoothly.

I know nothing about computers or IT, I can barely work my home pc , but what I do know is I worked as a temp for a very large company that had a whole entire floor full of nothing but "servers" (which again I have no clue what those are) and their servers where always down!
So I figure if this big international company with lots of money and resources can have server problems everyday, then so can a free site that asks nothing from us.
I agree its frustrating when CC is down but I just wait it out, and there is a new group on Myspace filling up with CC members, they have been a huge help when this site is down.
