What do you guys think of this? It's a verbatim copy of an email I received today.

Hello ,
I will like to make a 3 Tier cake which would serve 80 as a desert or
150 as a taster, for my upcoming wedding party.. this 3 Tier cake must be in Rich Chocolate Cake with Chocolate buttercream filling, covered in belgian chocolate curls.. the wedding will come up on the 16th of march 2007
I will want to be assure of your professionalism in handling this job
to its best cos this is the important part of the party as you know...
However, i will want to know the cost price for the above describe cake and other necessary things if any...
My wedding planner will come over to pick up the cake at your location.
Hope to hear from you soonest..
Regard,
(name deleted)

I'm thinking I should be booked. Or am I just being paranoid?

WOW, no talking face to face or discussion on this? I think I would be "booked" too

Unless you can email her back and tell her that you dont' do wedding business via emails..

emails are just for inquieries only..( oh heck however you spell that!)

also, did you see that the email starts with..

"I will like to make a 3 Tier cake"...well if she will like to make one, why is she contacting you? lol

I'm not sure if it's that or the tone of the "I will want to be assured of your professionalism" comment, but that whole email really torques my jaw.

I think I would respond to that email "I am sorry but I am booked on that day'.

sounds similar to one of those scam emails that someone else on CC got. I would email back and say you are booked.

It sounds like a scam -- doesn't even sound real. Personally I wouldn't write back at all. Frequently scammers look for a response email from you to make sure they have a legit email address -- and then the spam begins!! icon_mad.gif

If you hear from her again, state to her that emails are for inquiries only and sample cakes are 6 x 2 only (not full tiered cakes for free -- OOOIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEE!!) icon_confused.gif

This seems like some sort of scam, or joke.......just the wording is very strange to me, nevermind the bad grammer. My advice - just say no ! you are busy! icon_surprised.gif

My guess is SPAM. I've seen similar emails before. Don't reply!

My first thought is that English is not this person first language. Hence the clumsy phrasing. Maybe this is why folks are thinking it is spam/scam, because a great deal of these spams we receive are from folks outside of the U.S..

Guess it could be a scam, but in what way would they be scamming you? They are not asking for money, passwords, bank account or having you login into a site.

I wouldn't even respond. If they are a real person they will contact you again. The grammer and spelling are terrible on this, and if they are truly that concerned about your professionalism, then why didn't they call and set up a professional consultation? Although, if they are legit and contact you again, I think I would be double or triple booked for that day and absolutely too busy to take them on. They sound pushy, and I'm not sure that's the kind of customer I would want to take on. (If they're real, but I'm skeptical.)

I'm skeptical, but what if it is a legitimate inquiry and she just doesn't know. However, I'm with a few others here - the email sounds fishy.

I would respond, and if spam does come through you can also just block them.

(Sorry if I wasn't much help. icon_smile.gif

I agree, english might not be their first language. I'm no snob, I can handle a few spelling and grammatical errors. It's the pushy nature of the email that gets to me.

I think I'm booked. I'll let you know if I hear from her again.

Sounds like a common scam. They'll get you interested... you'll give them a quote for the cake, they'll tell you someone else will wire you a thousand dollars more than the price, and you must send them the difference. By the time you find out the wire transfer is no good, you're screwed. I have several DJ friends who get these e-mails all the time.

I would ignore it.

OMGoodness!!!!

I can't believe that really happens!! Can you believe people?

I went to my spam email account (I have a yahoo account for answering suspect stuff and for sweepstakes entries, stuff like that...) and answered her email with a nice note congratulating her on her wedding and telling her that I was booked. I then wished her a happy new year and thanked her for considering me. I wonder if I'll hear back...

Wow - the whole thing is so weird. I pride myself on good grammer and spelling (I pride myself, but it doesn't always work out that way! LOL) - and if she is truly concerned about professionalism, maybe she should re-read her e-mail, not to mention using spell check......but, enough of that...
what a weird e-mail. My thought is, if she TRULY has a wedding planner, than why are you getting a poorly written e-mail from the BRIDE? That's what you PAY a wedding planner for. Anyway - I think you did the right thing. Keep us posted if you here from her again!

Just ignore it. Here is the thread from the other CC'er who received remarkably similar (and disturbing) emails:

It is a scam, no good will come of even replying.

Do not even e-mail them back!!! Once they get an e-mail from you, it is very possible that they can obtain all kinds of personal information about you, via your e-mail address.

Just block their e-mail address from sending you any more correspondence.

I got the exact email!! today at 1:33.
I hope it didn't infect my machine.

I did send a vague email back.

My husband says they do these type of emails so dummies like me reply and then they get into my gateway or something like that.

arrgghh

I just responded to my email too. Exactly the same. I was asked in the post I started to post their email address and name, since it is spam. Would everyone that received this email, post the name of the person and email address of the person that sent it to them, so we know not to open their emails.

I talked to my brother and he said that they could not hack into your computer unless you opened something up from their email. It sounds more like, from someone else's post, that they want to get as much information from you, and just string you along. Maybe down the road try to steal your identity if you give them enough information.
