I just use whatever is on sale. I haven't found that much of difference, but then again, I haven't been doing this that long.

I used to only use C & H, but once my store was out and I used the Wal-Mart (Great Value) brand and I couldn't tell the difference. That's all I use now.

I use C & H powered sugar, but looks like I will have to find another brand, if C & H is discontinued. Is the store discontinuing it or is C & H stopping?

I shop at an odd little grocery store called Aldi, and their store brand ps is great and cheap (less than $1 per bag). If I can't get to Aldi, I get whichever brand is cheapest. I've never been able to tell a difference between that and a name brand variety.

Nothing but Imperial 10X for me because I never have to sift it. It is ultra fine. Kroger carries their brand of 10X and the couple of times Target was sold out of the Imperial I have purchased theirs. I hear it is made by Imperial for Kroger.............it looks and acts the same as the "Imperial" brand and both are about the same price.

Are you sure the store just isn't discontinueing the product? Is there another store around that would carry it?

For me it's Dixie Crystals. It seems to taste better than the store brands, I have tried them all.

Bakers & Chefs brand from Sam's. Occasionally I will pick up Great Value or Imperial sugar from Wal-Mart...both of which work equally well. They sell so much of it that the product is always very fresh and not clumpy. icon_smile.gif

I use a 6x bakery grade I buy at GFS. 6x has less starch so less lumps and not gritty.

I always use dixie crystals. I get it at wal mart, and it's either that, store brand, or domino. I think me and cakelover are the only ones out there that use this kind. I've read a lot of posts about ps and cakelover is the first I've seen mention this brand. Is it only available certain areas or what?

I am interested in trying the 6x as I have tried many 10x and they all seem the same. What is GFS so I can order some? Thanks.

Gordon Food Service:

Here is a blurb to back up my statement above from The Sugar Bible. As you can see the finer it is the more corn starch they need to add to make it hopefully not lump. At that point it states that it is then less suitable to use for non cooked items. 6x and 4 x are commercial grade and will make a better icing. Hope this helps all of you with your icing endevors.

"As might be expected, the finer the granulation, the greater the tendency of the sugar to lump, which explains why cornstarch is added to absorb any moisture from the air before the sugar can. The cornstarch adds what is perceived as a floury taste and makes powdered sugar less suitable than granulated sugar for use with ingredients that are not to be cooked. Powdered sugar comes in four degrees of fineness: 10xx, the finest; 10x, available in supermarkets; and 6x and 4x, both of which are available commercially."

Thanks for checking the website, didn't think of that! I've always used C&H and assumed everyone did. Glad to see that the other brands work just as well.

I've tried a number of brands. My favorite is dixie crystal. Unfortunately the one store that stocked for a couple of weeks has discontinued it.

Me too. I just pick up whatever.

Once I did use a name brand (dominoes) and seemed to have more problems with it than I did the walmart cheap stuff.

But overall, I find them to all be the same.

I use the Wal Mart brand if it says "pure cane sugar". If it's beet sugar, I use the Domino brand.

I've tried Domino's for $1.89 and didn't like it. It was gritty. YUCK!
My grocery store Price Chopper brand for $1.69 is great and the Walmart Brand "Great Value" for $1.29 is great.
I plan to try the Aldi's $1 kind that luv2bak4myboys mentioned. Thanks! icon_smile.gif

I usually use C&H or Imperial. I think I prefer Imperial, but I recently read in Cook's Illustrated that they didn't notice a difference in the name brands. I've only noticed a difference (in texture) when I buy from a store that isn't busy or doesn't rotate it's stock. I've always heard that the store brands have varying levels of cornstarch, so I've always skipped buying them.... maybe I should rethink that?

Come on, now WHY would a huge company like C&H discontinue making powdered sugar??? That's ridiculous. Someone's store must be discontinuing to carry it or something.

I use Wal Marts brand, now at $1.29. I haven't used Aldi's but I might grab a couple bags when I go by there next time, if it's under a buck a bag.
