I am making a one-layer sheet cake and am not sure how many mixes to use. I want it to be thick like the ones in the grocery stores. Thanks
well if you are using boxed cake mixes one will do the job, I however usually do 1 1/2 because just one mix doesnt give me the height I would like ... But I always keep my eye on it for the first few minutes to make sure nothing overflows either
I agree with the 1 1/2 suggestion. I want my cakes taller as well. I just use the left over mix for cupcakes or family cake or cake balls.
GL!

Yep...that's what I do also!
I use 2 boxes... and if I have any left over.. well we have cupcakes for dessert that night. Mmmmm....GOOD!! LOL
i use about 1 1/2. i go ahead and mix 2 mixes, fill the pan and then make few cupcakes with the extra batter.
I use 2 full boxes. that way I get a true 2 inch deep sheet cake. The hump I cut off is ziplocked and frozen and used for cake balls later on.
I only use one cup of water per recipe no matter what it calls for it makes it a little more dense. I also only use Pillsbury.

Is it ok to mix both box mixes at the same time or do I need to mix them seperately? Also do you use a flower nail?
You can mix both at the same time.
I use two flower nails when I do my 9 X 13 cakes. I don't know if it's necessary, but I always figure that it can't hurt.
I use one mix with the extender for my 9 by 13's. They always come out nice and tall....and I don't have to worry about it overflowing!

I mix both at the same time and I do use a flow nail, sprayed with PAM in the middle of both the 9X13 and the 11X16 pan
Yes, it's okay to mix both at the same time.
No, I don't use a flower nail, a heating core or bake even stripes. I just grease and flour my pans the old fashioned way and I've not had any problems with sticking.
