I have a couple of questions?
1 - is there a difference between sugar and gumpaste flowers?
2 - How do you do these beautiful flowers - and how might I be able to learn?

Thank you

Sugar paste is called by the name Fondant which is different than gumpaste. Gupaste will roll out thinner and and dry faster. There are several different books and DVD's out there that are great. Nick Lodge, Scott Wolley, Earnlene Moore are a few that have books and or DVD's out with instructions. HTH I learned through a Wilton class then bought several of the above books, DVD and learned more from them. I had the basics then improved my touch with the others.

Flowers can be made of Gumpaste which is also called sugarpaste in America. Sugarpaste in the UK is what is called fondant here. and is used to cover or enrobe a cake. You can also use pastillage but it dries awfully hard, artista paste and cold porcelaine are other products that can be used. You can also knead in Tylose powder to fondant and used that, but they flowers take longer to dry and are not as crisp looking, it's difficult to get really thin edges with fondant. I really think the best way to learn these is by using Nic Lodges gumpaste recipe and watching his video called "Video Facts for sugarcraft" it really is just a basic tape on what equipment to use for gumpaste, and that is helpful. But it also shows him actually making the rose. After that I would buy his "All In One" cutter for the quick rose, and his little booklet called "A Potpourri of flowers" it has 16 different flowers with color photos and some patterns or templates as well. But the most important thing for doing good gumpaste flowers is having the right tools to work with. I made a list of what I consider a basic gumpaste tool kit, expensive investment to begin with but they last a lifetime. You really can't do nice natural looking gumpaste flowers with the Wilton gumpaste kit, it isn't worth spending your money on. Here is a link to the gumpaste tool kit and Nics gumpaste recipe. Good luck, if you once get started you will love doing these flowers.
