I'm going to be making the cake for my brother's wedding in March. I've only done one other and it was a tiered round. My future sil really likes the look of the square and hexagon cakes. My question is...are these shapes harder to cover smoothly with fondant or easier?
If I feel comfortable with rounds, I don't want to do something different that will not look nice. I'm looking at the other shapes and wondering if it's harder to get it smooth with the corners.
Any help would be great. I think she would be fine with a round if I told her that would be easier, but I'd love to be able to try something new.
THanks in advance.

I actually find squares easier to cover than rounds. All you have to do is smooth the corners first then the side. You don't have as much of the 'tableclothe' affect around the cake to smooth. I've also done hexagons with out problems.

It's a matter of taste. Since the wedding is far enough off, why not do a couple trial cakes to see which you prefer.

Hexagons easier than square, about the same as round. But square is nothing that you can't master with a few practice goes. Don't roll the fondant too big, and smooth by sweeping from the bottom, in upwards motion.

Wow, great to know. Sounds like I could do a few practice runs and get the hang of it.
I like the tip of starting on the corners first and then the sweeping from the bottom up. I'm picturing what you mean, I hope it's correct. I'll have to try it.
THanks!
