I have read a couple of times that to use a cake recipe for cupcakes, an extra egg should be added. Can anyone confirm this? Does it perhaps depend on the recipe?

I've never heard this before. I've always used cake mixes and have never added an extra egg for cupcakes. I have added an extra egg if they are smaller than normal and it doesn't effect the outcome.
