Are there any good books about how to make cake figurines? I remember some time ago that there was a thread on some books that were non-cake books and are the figurines easy to make? Thank you very much.

I have the Sculpey books, they are really for clay modeling, but it is the same concept as the fondant. I found a couple of different one's at Michael's and got them with the 40 percent off coupons. I think these books are really good for a beginner because they give very detailed instructions.

I have a book "Figuras De Pan" that is wonderful. I can't imagine there isn't a book like it in English. The figures are made of flour, salt and water. The instructions are complete and very good. This particular book is published here in Mexico but the art form is International. Look in the library.

I also use the polymer clay books. I agree with cindy6250, the books are very good for beginners. My first book was "The Sculpy Way". It is a great book to start with. It gives you the basics for the tools you need, and step by step instructions for making the characters in the book.

To answer your question - is it easy? My experience has been that some figures are easier than others. I am a long way from being an expert, but the more I do, the more my modeling improves. It does take time and patience. I have worked mostly with mmf. You will find that at times you will need to let a piece dry before moving on to the next step. For instance last Christmas is the first time I attempted modeling. I was making a reindeer. I made the legs and then immediately set the body of the reindeer on the legs. I completed the piece, let it set on the kitchen table, and when I came back a couple of hours later got a good laugh. My reindeer had rhino legs! icon_lol.gif The legs were too soft to support the weight of the body. I should have left the legs to dry overnight before going to the next step.

In September I made a cake at my husband's request. He wanted me to model his car to put on a cake for a car show. I thought he was crazy and didint' think it was remotely possible for me to do. I tried and it didn't turn out too bad. My best suggestion is to try it! You might be surprised what you can do. I am now addicted to modeling. Take a look at some of Aine2's work. She is amazing and a real inspiration!

Good luck. Give it a try and let us know how you make out. Like I said, I'm not expert, but will be happy to give you any help that I can.
