SO the other day I was at a local grocery store in the baking aisle, and I happened to notice they had a couple of rows of Crisco Sticks, about a dozen or so packages with the green Zero Trans Fat labels (yuk), and about a dozen with just a regular Crisco label. Which got my mind racing.....

Could it be??? They still have ORIGINAL CRISCO in stock?????

party.gif

I only had enough money for that particular grocery trip, but I vowed that I would return - I would go clean them out of their ORIGINAL CRISCO sticks since I LOVE the sticks, I can't stand to measure shortening.

So TONIGHT was THE NIGHT - I stopped by the store on my way home from work, my business account check card in hand, and strolled into the store feeling VERY confident and superior. I grabbed a basket, marched right up to the baking aisle, and filled the basket. I counted 11 packages, which was gonna make me a TON of icing icon_cool.gif

As I began to unload my basket at the checkout, the cashier commented "wow, is that a lot of Crisco!"

"it sure is", I smirked. "They changed to the Zero Trans Fat garbage and now my cake icing never turns out right. But since you had some of the original Crisco still on your shelves, I wanted to grab it so I can once again have icing the way I want it."

"oh....." the cashier looks a little concerned.... and a chill came over me as I feared the most hated words of a savvy shopper - quantity limits icon_surprised.gif

But I was NOT prepared for what actually came from her lips: "um.....well what that is is the new packaging....you see, look here at the nutrition info, these have no trans fats. They stopped making the packaging with the green label...now it's just basic Crisco."

icon_confused.gificon_mad.giftapedshut.gif took everything I had not to start shouting expletives at the top of my lungs!!!

I tightly thanked her for the information, asked if I could please restock all but 2 packages (after all - girl's gotta make icing SOMEHOW), paid for my purchase and then sheepily slunk back to my car, head hung low. icon_cry.gif

The moral of the story is - ALWAYS read the label before making a purchase. Until you do - you never know what you're buying. icon_rolleyes.gif [/i]

I've been using these sticks when I teach course 1 and haven't had a problem with them. *knock on wood* Guess I am a lucky one.

I agree.... Bah to Crisco! My cakes are not holding together like the good ol' stuff. If you stop buying brand name and go for off-label (Like Target brand) I believe most are still using trans fats.

Hey! Why dontcha go ahead and grit your teeth, take out like 2 big tubs of shortening, premeasure out your 1 or 2 cup amounts, wrapem in plastic wrap and put them all in a tupperware with a lid. That way you only have to "do the deed" once. icon_redface.gif

I always just measure my shortening by weight right into the mixer bowl. 7oz=1cup. I put my mixer bowl onto the scale and add crisco till it's the right weight. Works well for me and no extra measuring cups or anything to use. icon_smile.gif

I was nearly tricked by the new "old" label. I was so excited to see that the label didn't say "Zero trans fat." I HAD to read the ingredients to see that it wasn't too good to be true. It was too good to be true. icon_cry.gif BUT, with the measuring hatred aside, I have found a decent way to get my buttercream to turn out OK. I use about 1/4 cup of trans fat store brand with 3/4 cup crisco. Just adding that small bit has helped. Geez! Now really, is trans fat really that bad?!?!? icon_wink.gif To bad you can't just buy a tub of trans fat to sprinkle into the BC!

Oh yeah Springflower reminds me... I was trolling around the recipes area and noticed a lot of people were advising this little secret to making the new Crisco work (and Im gonna try it!) to add a teaspoon of cornstarch to the icing as it whips. Worth a try, no?

Hey Im lazy too and like the sticks. Shhh don't tell

Tried the cornstarch trick. It did change the texture of the icing, but I still pulled great gaping holes in it and it didn't like to stick to the crumbcoat. It did NOT make it the same as it was before THE CHANGE.

OK loriana,

you & me should get together with a pallet of generic trans-fat-laden shortening tubs from Costco, and just start portioning. We can sell 1-cup portions, premeasured and wrapped in plastic, here on CC for $1 per cup. No - make that 75 cents per cup. We'll make BANK and everyone here at CC will be happy too thumbs_up.gif

Okay, so I had the same question come up this week. I bought the Walmart brand, thinking that it still had the trans fat still in it. When I opened it up, it was extremely soft, I would compare it to hair conditioning cream. (yuck!) I looked on the nutrition facts and it said "O grams trans fat"

I then pulled all my other Crisco containers (I had 2 butter flavored and one regular trans fat free) and they all said "O grams trans fat" So....that got me to thinking....how much trans fat was in the regular stuff? I thought my butter flavored Crisco was older and still had all it's fat, but I guess not. Anyone out there still have an old container and mind telling me what it says for trans fat?

I do have a PRE-CHANGE little can of Crisco in my pantry (not enough in it to make ANY icing icon_cry.gif ) it claims to have 1.5 grams trans fat per serving.

I never had a minute's trouble with my frosting until Crisco changed...now it's just not right. And I have my first big wedding cake coming up...so...I have got to figure out what to do!!! Somebody tell me what to do!!! LOL

Hey, on that Walmart shortening, which one did you buy? I got the one w/ "meat fats" in it, and it was like hand lotion - really soft. I am returning it.

If you get the Walmart ALL VEGETABLE shortening, it is like the old Crisco - oh, except it's MUCH cheaper!!! Works great for me. I use it 1/2 and 1/2 w/ butter and it has been nothing but great ever since I started using it. Crusts well, smooths great (at least that's what you all tell me in your comments of my pics, ha ha). icon_smile.gif

Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

This is too funny!! Same thing happened to me when this whole crisco thing started at the begging of the year... I was so happy and proud of myself, since I thought I had found some "old formula" crisco... my husband looks at me, asks, have you gone mad? So I explained to him, well, sure thing, he checks the label on back, and 0 Trans Fat! I was soo mad!!!!

And regarding the whole measuring by weight thing, I do that too, I believe it is 6.8 oz per cup of crisco, HTH!

Actually the Walmart shortening that I described is their "All Vegetable Shortening"...maybe this is their Trans Fat Free version. Afterall, it has no trans fat listed on the nutrition facts. It's a sad result!

Oh come on, don't ya just love the way water beads off your hands and that eternal moisturized feeling you get from handling it? I think I've scalded my hands a couple of time trying to get that stuff off of me.

Love the sticks HATE measuring. I wish others would follow suit. Would I be a whimp if I used gloves when measuring? (Did I mention I REALLY HATE measuring?)

What are you guys measuring by cups? Measure by weight! seriously. Just put your mixing bowl on the scale and plop in the veg shortening. Use a disher and your hands never touch the shortening.

Not sure if it's just an OH store, but...
Aldi's has shortening that has 3 grams of trans fat. Only $1.89 for a 3 pound can.

For measuring out shortening from a can I just run my measuring cup under hot tap water, quickly shake it dry and use a butter knife or spatula to fill it and then empty it. No problems and it usually doesn't wind up getting on my hands.

Ok guys, listen up. I've beaten the system --- so far. I have 30 cans of the OLD Wal-Mart shortening on a shelf in my garage.

The secret? No one seems to rotate stock at Wal-Mart. They just keep shoving the new stuff in front of the old. Head there NOW! Pull out cans until you find the ones in the back WITH the transfat!

Aldi's is a little soft, IMHO--even with the transfat.

I'm with Leah. This is stoooooooopid!!
