I was wondering if anyone here also does catering or knows about it?

I am getting legal next week to bake from home and was wondering if catering is something you can also do from home?

Is it the same process as a home bakery? Do you just get inspected the same way you do for a home bakery?

If this is possible, what info or advice can you give me about catering.
I would love to be able to add this to the home bakery thing sometime down the road.

Thanks for your time and info! icon_smile.gif

Catering is not the same, it's a lot more strict where I live. However, every area is different so check out with your local agencies to find out.

I forgot to say I am in NC.

I have searched the net and cant find any sites with good info. Mostly e-book sites.

Does anyone know how to search for a good website with real info for NC?

Thanks

Catering is generally limited to commercial kitchens, separate from a home kitchen. At minimum 3-compartment sinks, mop sink, prep sink, hand wash sink, separate toilet/sink.

The local Health Department, the same place that licenses restaurants, would be the authority.

I would think that catering would fall into a different category from baking. You are dealing with perishable items and would probably fall under the Health Department for licensing (therefore stricter) not the the Ag. Dept. I would start by calling your local Health Department.

Yes, catering is considered a different business, and often requires catering liability insurance along with whatever your state requires. I would think that you could not do it with a home kitchen. Since you are dealing with alot more perishable type foods, I would think you would have to have an approved licensed kitchen seperate from your house. Getting into catering can be an expense venture, although once established can be profitable.
