I have a friend who has a son and he is 12 years old. He has been up at St. Jude several times and had to go back appr. a month ago because his brain tumor came back. He has been up there since and is finally getting to come home to do treatments. I want to do a welcome home cake for him but I dont have a clue of what to do. His mom said he loves chocolate so I will have to do a chocolate cake and chocolate icing. She said that he is at that stage that is really hard to pick for.

Also his moms bday is Thursday and she also loves chocolate. I would love to do both of them a cake or 2 but I have no clue of what to do. She has been there for her son through thick and thin and she really deserves one. Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks a bunch.

I'm betting that even if you did a plain choc cake with choc icing, they would luv it!! How about a choc basketweave with choc covered strawberries on top?

I might can do that debi, didnt think about that.. do you think i should do 1 cake for both of them and say "Welcome Home (w/the sons name) & Happy Birthday (w/the moms name) or should I do 2 cakes, 1 for each.

you could do a 6" round for each one of them. I like the idea of the chocolate coverd strwberrys for mom but seems alittle mature for the son. what if you did something with chocolate icing a bright colors maybe gelmatric shapes...I dont know. I am sure whatever you decide will be greatly appriciated

Chocolate and chocolate yum!

I like the idea of doing 2 cakes - but combining it into one. Maybe a 2 tier chocolate cake and on the side of one, with fondant letters or a gumpaste banner, say Happy Birthday _____, and on the side of the other, do the same saying Welcome Home ______. And then have stars / balloons on wires and cirliques coming out of the top in bright primary colours?

Make any sense? lol.

The first thing that came to mind is one of my favorite cakes by bonjovibabe. Maybe you could do something like this, but make a mom and son instead? May be totally wrong for a 12 year old boy but I just have the image of the mom caring for her son and this is what came to mind:

I like the strawberry/basket idea for the mom.
How about doing the yellow cancer ribbon for the son. Of the "Live Strong" bracelet around the bottom of the cake.
Sounds like it would fit, since he is one strong boy.

Hope that helps,

Katy
