Hello everyone, I have a wedding cake coming up soon and the bride would like a simple fondant cake with scroll work. I have a couple of questions regarding this and I hope I can get help from all of you.

- Is the scroll work usually done with royal icing? It is usually a very thin consistency?

- Is there a specific pattern to follow or is it mainly done free hand?

- I will also be adding ribbon, how do you attach ribbon the the base of each tier with out the ribbon falling off? Do you also use royal icing?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to CC Idali!

Some do scrollwork freehand and others use a template. It can be something as simple as a cookie cutter that has a unique or pretty swirl on it that you press lightly into the cake and trace with icing. Scrollwork can be done with RI or buttercream. Usually, if it's on fondant, RI is used. You want the consistancy to be thinner-like for writing.

If your ribbon is going on a fondant covered cake, you can use a little piping gel or RI to attach and then put a dot in back where the ends meet.
