I was asked by our school to donate 2 cakes for the cake walk for our fall festival, which I am doing traditional style cakes, like a coconut creme and a black forrest (I think)...BUT I was also asked to donate a cake for the auction which the ingredients will be bought by the school. I wanted to wow our "country" folks with something they have never seen. I decided I wanted to do a elaborate purse cake. BUT....Do I have enough talent to pull this off is my question.....I have done fondant work and I love working with MMF and havent had a problem...but I have a order for Satin Ice in so with that said I am going to use it for stability issues...I know they have to be hard to do....so another question is this...for those that have done the elaborate purse cakes (the ones covered in fondant with gp or all fondant details, lustre dusted and pearl dusted) is there a way one of you can help me through all this detail...willing to maybe talk me through this cake and really help me...kinda like a instructor? PLEASE ... I really want to WOW them....there is a guy and his wife coming to see the cakes and might even help fund my shop (kinda like a silent partner with cake benefits LOL) and if he sees that I can do this he is more then likely gonna do it.

The kind of cake purse I want to do is the stand up kind with the standing handles and zipper details.

Now I love the ones done in BC and all but I really want to tackle a all fondant coved cake. The fall festival will be the first week of November. SO.....is there anybody here at CC willing to be my instructor for this? AND.....if you have to by looking at my gallery tell me if I even have enough talent to accomplish this...

Problem w/doing a cake purse if what if the boy wins a cake purse? umm dont think he would like that..lol..now if it were a girl then that would be fine

No the cake purse will be for an auction...men don't really have to bid on the purse...but I bet they will if their wives are there

Hi! I just got finished looking at your pix and I think you could do anything you set your mind to I don't have purse experience, but I made a diaper bag a couple of weeks ago. One tip (and it's helped me on the sculptured cakes) is that I don't apply all one piece of fondant. I do it in sections (like on the diaper bag and the black train cakes in my pix). I'd go for the purse if I were you

Thanks Christi! I actually made a 12x18 sheet cake and cut it into four (like a big cross into the cake). Then I stacked two layers, put a cardboard and stacked the other two layers. Then I kind of carved some away from the top so that it looked like a rounded top. HTH

It's amazing I am in the same boat as you! I received a request for a bridal shower cake with a purse and shoe theme-and I have never made a purse or a shoe I am very nervous about the construction part, but I am also very determined! It seems as though we're in this together, and I believe we can do it. If I come across any great tips I'll let you know

oh sorry..misread..hehe...i think you can do it or do anything..i think you are very good..love your cakes...i dont know anything about purse cakes or any other type of cake that isnt a sheet cake or round cake..im doing my first topsy turvy cake for next week and im skeered outta my mind..lol...

Christi, you most certainly can do it. You overcame lots of obstacles when learning to make bows and look at you now!! Your bows are fantastic. Take a deep breath and go right ahead. Here is one done by FabulousMonique for some inspiration. You could put put your own touches and I'm sure it will sell for lots at the auction.

I say go for it. I never did a purse before I told a client, "sure I can do that," or an armodilla, or an alligator. I just said yes, and then tried to figure it out along the way.

Have you looked at the tutorial here on CC? maybe it can be a starting point for you.

So I don't know when you posted this, I assume it waa s a while ago, but I'm wondering, did you make the purse cake & if so, how did it go? I would have advised you to go for it, a purse cake would be great for an aution.  Hope all went well...

Cake purses aren't as difficult as they look.  Don't worry, you can wow them.
