what is fondant? i'm sort of new to cake backing and such, and i found a cake on here i want to make for my friends 18th birthday?

fondant is a sugar dough. it has a smooth look to it, unlike buttercream frosting. when you see wedding cakes that look like they're covered in play-doh or something smooth, it's fondant.

I ONLY use Fondant, if you look at my photos...
Maybe one isn't, but I love FOndant..

You can do anything with it..cover a cake, make flowers, pearls, lace, ruffles, figure etc..... it does not need refrigeration unless the cake under it need to be refrigerated. Try it, it could be a great challenge at first, but you won't regret it you decide to get into Fondant..here is an example of how it looks on the cake:
