i have read so many stories here, that i figured id NEVER do it myself. i had learned a lesson through others..i was safe. yet, i was mistaken. i stored a cake in the oven..then turned it on later! thank goodness it was just the 8 inch round and not the half sheet it was going on. i had iced it, bbut not decorated yet. i turned the oven on 400, and about 5 min later, tons of smoke was pouring out, and i KNEW what had happened..lol. luckily my sons b-day party is not until tomorrow, so i had time to rebake.

Yup, I've done that too! However, I have learned my lesson and have never done it again.

I feel your pain!! I thought the same thing about not putting something in the oven and forgetting. I put a gumpaste shoe in the oven to dry and forgot and turned on the oven to bake cookies. Needless to say, that shoe went into the trash. Worse yet, it was my 4th try at making that darn thing!!!

Yikes! I bet that smelled! I always put my dirty cookie sheets that I use for french fries and stuff in the oven, then forget to wash them! And then when I turn on the oven and it starts to pre-heat, I hear this sound from the cookie sheet warping or something. OOPS!

When I store something in my oven, baking sheets or a cake, I ALWAYS put a sticky note on the oven controls saying, "CAKE IN OVEN"!! After reading a couple of these threads, I took it to heart as I can see myself burning up a cake I had spent hours decorating!!

I'm like Christeena-I put a sticky note on top of the oven. For our Fall Festival at church I made 2 cakes with Royal icing leaves. I put the leaves in the oven to dry so kids and dogs woundn't get them and they would be out of the way. Although there was a time I still turned the oven on with the leaves in there-then I remembered real quick and took them out. You can get so used to seeing the sticky note that you really don't read it every time and still forget (or at least I do)!! icon_surprised.gif Maybe I need to put that note on the controls like Christeena does-I just had mine on top of the oven between burners. thumbs_up.gif

been there done that. Left barney cookies in the oven overnight to allow the icing to dry and the next day prehaeated the oven with cookies still inside.

My sister put the carcass of her thanksgiving turkey in the oven and forgot about it until she started smelling something funny four days later icon_surprised.gif
