Hi all! I know this question has probably been asked (or maybe not), but I was wondering if any of you have used Satin Ice Fondant?

I've never used fondant before, I just recently did my first decorated cake with just BC last week. I'd like to test the fondant out, but have heard a million horror stories about Wilton's and how bad it taste. Plus, I'd prefer not to make my own right now since I want to get the full experience.

I see that my local store offers Satin Ice in vanilla and chocolate flavor. Does it taste better than homemade? Easy to work with?

Any opinions or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks! icon_smile.gif

I found the Satin Ice very easy to work with! Tastes pretty good too! I had just gotten some of the dark chocolate flavor and tasted it. It really does taste like Tootsie Rolls!!

i use both chocolate and vanilla and love it. the texture is much softer and smoother than mmf (marshmallow fondant - homemade). it also rolls twice as thin (i roll it to around 1/8" ). other than mmf,i have not made other recipes myself. i agree wilton stinks.

www.satinfinefoods.com manufacturer info

www.intotheoven.com has great prices , fast low shipping.

forgot to say also that the taste is great. its much more desirable to the grown up taste pallette...in my opinion, mmf appeals mainly only to children. bleck.

Hi there . . . if you do a search for "YOUR FAVORITE FONDANT" you will come up with a thread that speaks about Satin Ice fondant (and others) that should help you make an informed decision . . . personally, I loved my one and only experience with fondant . . . and it was with Satin Ice!

I love Satin Ice! It's all I use on my cookies. I eat it plain (usually the little hard bits that are left over after I'm done baking and decorating for the night). Don't tell my dentist. icon_smile.gif

I've tried the Wilton, just for practice, and I've tried Satin Ice and I love Satin Ice. I haven't tried the chocolate yet, but the vanilla flavor is delicious. The few times I've used it I've caught myself picking off little bits before rolling it out and eating it.. shh

It's also nice to get it already colored. I tried coloring some black, because the place I buy it had ran out, and boy is that a major pain! I had bruises on my hands from so much kneading.. haha I'm sure other colors are a lot easier, and if you start off with a dark color it's a lot easier, but all they had left was white and vanilla, so my choices were limited. Also, I was coloring about 20 lbs of it, so don't let my comments discourage you.

Try some, I'm sure you will love it.. and yes, you will get frustrated until you get use to it. I still get frustrated, but I just keep on trying. icon_smile.gif I will recommend it to anyone that wants to try fondant.

Good luck!

Holly

I'm not sure how often it's said, but I think the CC boards have the coolest members. Every time I make a post I get so many people willing to help...I love it! icon_smile.gif

Thank you all for your help...I'm definitely going to try it. I let you know how my first experience goes.

Hey can I jump in here? I went to a new store last night - Cash & Carry and they have Satin Ice premade. I didn't get any but now think I'll give it a whirl.

On another note, I purchased a 50lb sack of "White Satin, Super Fine Powdered Sugar" for just $20bucks. .... that's .40cents a pound. I do not know if this is 10X sugar, but the store manager said this is a finer (softer) blend that the other powdered sugar they carry.

Has anyone ever used this brand of powdered sugar???? I made a small batch of frosting last night, tested it on my picky 15 yr/o DD, she said it was really good. Found frosting to be very smooth.

I may have to make a large batch to test out SugarShack's theory!

Satin Ice is great, I have used it a lot. My new favourite is Fondx, although I will use Satin Ice when I need a lot in one color. I always add a flavor to my fondant as well. Wilton is terrible.

Wilton Rolled Fondant is a great learning tool, but it is not something I would serve someone.

I discovered SatinIce over two years ago, and it is all I use now.

Is Satin Ice available at stores like Michael's or do you have to order it from the internet?

Could anyone describe what it tastes like? I made the mmf for the first time last week and loved it. Everyone I know who never liked fondant couldn't stop picking at it. So if the Satin Ice tastes even better I'd be interested in trying it.

I am a FondX fan as well! However, SatinIce was my all time favorite before I found FondX!

I use Satinice as well and love it. I buy mine directly from www.satinfinefoods.com You have to call them and order a minimum of 1 case. I buy a case of 5lb buckets (8 buckets in a case)of assorted flavors and colors and split it with my other cake decorating friends. I have found this to be the cheapest way to purchase it as I don't have a local retailer who has it.

My local retailer charges way too much for SatinIce, so I also order it directly from the company.

How much is it for a case?

satinfinefoods will require you to buy 2 20lb buckets the first time for around 50 each plus shipping.

i buy from www.intotheoven.com you can buy the 20lb for 50 or even 2lb or 5lb containers. it is less per pound though if you buy in bulk . when i buy one 20lb container, i pay 11 for shipping and usually get it on the third day.

to the person who asked what a description of the taste is:
like the most flavorful vanilla , very aromatic, smooth real butter buttercream tastes like. (when its soft and fresh is the best time to get this ). when its been on a cake a day or two, still tastes the same only the texture has dried out a bit.

i love when i first open up the bucket and my kitchen is flooded with the strong vanilla smell. mmmmmm icon_smile.gif

Ok, I'm going to jump in with a negative, but I will also explain that it MAY not be Satin Ice's fault!!

When I bought a tub of it to try (I usually use MMF and love it, but heard such great things about Satin Ice I wanted to try it) I was shocked when I opened it and was greeted by the overwhelming smell of Play-doh. When I tasted it, it was OK at first, but then there was a Play-doh aftertaste. (No, I don't eat Play-doh, but you know what I mean! Hahaha!)

I was so disappointed that I logged on here and asked other members about it, and think I know what happened. A few other members have commented that they have had this experience if the product got too hot for too long of a time. Well, the FedEx guy around here is famous for dumping your package on the steps and not even ringing the bell, so it sat on my steps in 90+ degrees for a few hours. I think that may have been the issue. I have not tried it again yet, but after the weather cools a bit, I am going to give it a second chance. Mainly because so many people swear by it, I know what I had must've been a fluke. And I hope we have a break in the weather soon because I am almost at the end of a 50lb tub of hi-ratio shortening, and I won't order it when it's hot!! icon_mad.gif I don't wanna go back to Crisco!! Waaahhh! icon_lol.gif

Well, I just ordered my first 20 lb. bucket off of Ebay for $47 (that's including the $20 shipping cost to my area). UPS dropped it off on my back porch at 1:47 pm (I was tracking it at my parent's house) and I ran over to my house at 3:00 pm to just get it in the house. We had 90 degree temps that day and the box was in the direct sunlight for the amount of time it was on my porch. It seems okay, maybe a bit sticky but I haven't rolled it out yet... I've been playing with it for molding a little and haven't had much trouble. I LOVE the taste... I brought some over by my parents to try (my mom DESPISES MMF & Wilton) They both LOVED it and okayed me to use it on their 25th anniversary cake in December icon_smile.gif

You can call Satin Fine Foods directly and ask them for a supplier/cake supply store in your area that sells it.

I know the very strong smell you are talking about. I think it's just because it was packaged so tightly that it all builds up and then you get that big whiff....but I like it! LOL!

I find that the really fresh containers of Satin Ice are slightly more sticky than the older containers, and a little bit of PS solves that problem.

I taste tasted Wilton several months ago and it was just blah, but not disgusting like the Satin Ice.

I learned to make the MMF, which is yummy, and the guests at tonight's party said it was great.

Then again, I'm really new to all of this cake decorating stuff....

I'm with you, Melvira, and I'm afraid to buy more!

P.s. mine was directly from a bakery store in Rhode Island, so I'm not sure what happened to it.

I use alot of Satin Ice and used to buy it directly from Satin Ice by the case loads. I then opened an account with CK and started buying it at wholesale prices, which is around $40 per 20 lb. pail.

I have tried just about everything expect for FondX. My favorite is imported from Switzerland, and while it costs more, and is almost impossible to find, it is the best I've used so far. I live near Albert Uster which sells really great fondant, and it has a slight citirus flavor, but it has to be tinted white (or whatever color) because it is translucent. Nick Lodge mentioned that Albert Uster is coming out with a (pre-tinted) white fondant in the near future. This is a really nice product. Doesn't dry out quickly, which is nice because you can work with it longer before it starts hardening.

I work exclusively with fondant, so I have tried many different brands, and have stopped using Satin Ice recently. I found that it has a great deal of gum in it. I like the shine, vanilla flavor, the great smell and elasticity, but it also dries way too quickly and develops elephant skin to easily. It is great to use if you need dark, strong colors like red and black, for example, since it's so difficult to tint fondant in these shades. BUT....like I said, it dries way too quickly and it can crack around the edges too easily. The chocolate is awesome, too, but also has that elephant skin issue.

PME is coming out with a new fondant which is really high quality and taste very good. It's not available in the U.S. yet, but it's coming soon.

I can't wait to try and cover a cake with fondant. I use it exclusively on my cookies and I have had problems with elephant skin if I cut out too many pieces and don't use them fast enough. I can't wait to start my decorating classes next week!!!
