I cannot speak to the exact information you are requesting, but I do know that as a woman you are entitled to some government money for small business! Go to the link on the CC "how to start a business" page (for your particular state) and you should be able to find info there on your state's site! Good luck!!

I've been talking to a person at our local SCORE office about grants. He told me that grants for start up businesses are practically NON existant. But I know i read a thread here that someone did get the grant for the business. If anyone wants the information i got from the SCORE guy, I'd be happy to send it along via email.

Hi,

Yes..there really is no money for start up business unless you have been in business for approx. 3 years, your credit or your co-signers credit is above par.

I worked on my business plan, my credit and went to SBA people and the SCORE people and got NOTHING!

There ARE some free grants out there and that was what I was asking about.

The poster had said she had gotten about 10 or 11g's from her grant and was asking what kind of equipement she should purchase.

She put the link to the grant that she used into the post.

Thanks!

in order to get a grant....do you have to "give back" to the community in some way, like offer jobs or something?

little cake, no not really but that is a good way to keep your Karma happy..lol

Federal monies requires that you provide a certain amount of jobs , but that is if you're a large company asking for big time federal grants

I Think!

Hi,
We got this grant through Vesid which is in the NY State Dept of Education. Vesid stands for Office of vocational and educational sevices for individuals with disabilities. My husband has spinal spondiolitis(sp) and disk degenerative disease. He sees a neurosurgeon for this and is unable to work in his trained occupation (construction). This is one of the reasons we qualified for this grant. HTH

everyone always tells me "you're a single woman with a business....go get a grant!"....

like they are just handing them out left and right to us single gals....

i see that dude on tv with all the question marks on his suit hoppin around saying the government wants to give ya money....i think he just wants to sell his book!

it sure would be nice to get one tho....i sold my house last year, and with the equity bought an extremely distressed commercail property to turn into a bakery, but...i've just been doing what i could with cash....so it's gonna be awhile before i get it up and running.

the thing is i've done everything with cash, ...i guess i was raised by my single mom(in the 60's)...drilled into my head..."stay out of debt"...so i been doing things "old school".

if i could get into my place and get my overhead down...dude i'd be sittin pretty....now sometimes it seems like i make money to give to other people.

It would be great if you could live on your property to save yourself some money.

I was looking at something down here, in a neighborhood that I really don't think my business would fit in but it was a great little property with a few 2 larger or 4 small..couldn't remember..lol..and 2 aprt upstairs..for....850,000.00...ha thumbsdown.gif

it has a guest house (700 square ft) in the back...

that's how i sprained my wrist...i was painting the bathroom in the guest house...stepped off the ladder onto some exposed pipes where the tub is gonna go...down i went!

my son rewired it and helped me hang sheetrock and put in new kitchen cabinets this summer.

it's almost done.

between the 2 places i got about 3000 square feet...and i got it for a song...i actually was able to pay cash for it....no one wanted it there was so much junk in it.

it was a junk store...with the junk still in it...loaded to the ceiling.

16 truckloads and 300 hefty bags full.

theres a cute little 50's retro diner across the street...its a good location....but people think i'm crazy...ha ha ha....

but isn't that a requirement for being an enterpeneur???

after i'm done they'll think i'm a genius....ha ha ha...they keep telling me to just tear it down and put up a metal building (charming)...

but it has good bones....kinda looks like one of those old places they have on marthas vineyard.

oh boy, i've wriiten a novel...i'm always wound up after saturday...

10 hours of go go go!!!!....

it can really be a stressful job, with all the time contrants, can't it?

and i'm only going at 75% with the bum wrist.

i was running behind all day today.

how's your back/neck? are you feeling better?

It actually sounds charming, I can't wait to see before and after shots!

I took Sunday and last Monday off to give myself 48 hours to do what I normally do in 1/2 day...Thank you for asking..I had forgoten that you were the one that hurt your hand!

I couldn't get out of bed for those 48 hours! I was coming down with a cold or flu so that sleep was the best thing that could've happened to me!

I have a quote for you and your enterpeneurship:

...If you're an entrepreneur, you're going to break new ground. A lot of people are going to say it's not possible. You can't accept that too easily. A good entrepreneur is going to find a way...

Oh man littlecake, that sounds positively awesome! I had a similar situation with my house... after my grandma passed away (my best friend ever!!) her kids came and took all that they wanted (translation: anything of value) and left the house full of the rest of her (what they considred) 'junk' for me to sort out because I bought the house. But you know, that was the most wonderful chore... finding new homes for the things that she loved. I wish you the best of luck with your new place... they will be so jealous when it's done!!

My first attempt at getting an SBA loan was a real education. The bank said that since I was in the food industry, they required that I be in business 3, preferrably 5, years before they would issue a new business loan.

I said, "Wait a minute. I have to be in business 5 years before I can get a loan to start a business? Does anyone besides me see the irony in that?"

And they wonder why we start our businesses in our homes.

Indy the SAME freakin' thing happened to me! I was told the reason that they required your business to be up and running for 3-5 years because FOOD INDUSTRY has the highest turnover in businesses so it's a HIGH risk investment and banks are in business to make money.

They use formulas now to figure out their profit turnover..grrrrrrrrr. What happen to people BELIEVING in a concept!!??

SO, they will give you money to expand but not to start...so I have all my paperwork, business plans saved and as soon as I hit that 3 year mark, I'm marching myself right back to the bank!!

The SBA doen't give loans, they act as a loan guarantor, they are not fast and loose with the funds, but if you can get them to give you money...it's a goodly sized loan with TERRIFIC TERMS!

But, SCORE does run free business seminars and I'm trying to show my face around so when it comes time to re-apply...they can see that I was totally commited to my business!

RisqueBusiness, I found a bank that has a whole dept devoted to 'women in business" and they have been easier to work with. No approved monies yet, but they are being very very helpful.

good luck!!! indydebi!!!!
i wish they had something like that around here!

i was in business for 3 years....went to my bank for a 7 thousand dollar loan to put a new roof on the property i bought...

now how much sense does this make???

i own the property outright...and my business equipment too....so i have some assets.

TURNED DOWN FOR A MEASLY 7 K.

i was like ....pffft..ok...i'll just save it up like i did for everything else... but it was humiliating...

Sorry, to info on getting money.

littlecake - just wanted to say "You go, girl." You seem like a strong, sensible woman (but aren't we all) and I know you are going to do great. We're all pulling for you.

Melvira - what a touching story about your grandma. I am sure it would have made her happy to know how lovingly you took care of all the things that made up her life.
